Current Controversy in South Korea edit

Recently, there is an ongoing controversy regarding the nature of his death. Although the cause of his death was ruled as a suicide, there has been an emerging concern that his wife murdered both her daughter and her husband. The case is quite new, so not everything has been told yet. Poeticfeelings (talk) 12:05, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Nationality edit

Is he North or South-Korean? It would be nice to add place of birth and death. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.140.249.137 (talk) 11:26, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Links edit

Hi Guys I tried to add some links to pages about 김광석, I think I put the links in the wrong place should be under external link or something to that affect, also added link to Korean Wiki, not sure how these are usually added, I've not posted to Wiki before so if I've messed anything up my apologies, . I know his music has featured in a number of Korean films, I think JSA or something related to the DMZ

my favourite song of his is probably

"서른 즈음에" - 김광석

또 하루 멀어져 간다 "Again the day draws to an end"( that's more of a guess, my Korean isn't that good) 내뿜은 담배 연기처럼 "like cigarette smoke billowing out" 작기만한 내 기억 속에 무얼 채워 살고 있는지 ...

if anyone knows of any English sites with more information about KwangSeok could you please post links. thanks,

Requested move edit

Kim Kwang-SeokKim Kwang Seok — While checking up on the recent move by 옹박인생, I found that the form without the hyphen predominated in English-language sources. We should follow their lead. Gavia immer (talk) 15:30, 25 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment. Evidence to support a move? Spelling, hyphenation and capitalisation can vary wildly for transliterated Korean names. Convention per WP:NC-KO would seem to be Kim Kwang-seok, unless a clear preference to the contrary can be established. PC78 (talk) 17:08, 25 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
The (imperfect) Google test shows the unhyphenated name predominating [1], though it doesn't allow for a real distinction between hyphenated and unhyphenated forms. The unhyphenated form is used for Amazon music listings [http://www.amazon.com/Best-Kim-Kwang-Seok/dp/B000RZGFPW/ref=sr_1_3?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285435728&sr=8-3] [http://www.amazon.com/Playing-Clouds-Kim-Kwang-Seok/dp/B003TTZU8G/ref=sr_1_6?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285435728&sr=8-6], on allmusic [2], and the "yesasia" music store [3]. While you are right that "transliterations can vary wildly", in this case there is a predominating form in English that takes precedence over the generic naming convention. Hmmm. My own personal inclination with regards to hyphens and capitalisation would be to fall back on the naming convention rather than a google search. This could indicate a preference by the subject though, so I'll give this move a weak support on that basis. I'll leave a message at WT:KOREA which may get a few more eyes on this discussion. • Comment. Kim is a Korean surname. But Kwang-Seok is a Korean general name as ONE WORD, okay? Kwang is not a middle name. Would you want to be confused with Kwang and Seok, each of name? middle name or last name? This following is a correct spell as Korean generated name.... Kwangseok, or Kwang-seok, or Kwang-Seok.--옹박인생 (talk) 18:23, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
What you describe is a useful standard for romanizing Korean names in general, and one that we generally use. However, a more important standard is that on the English Wikipedia we use names that are established in English when they exist, and this takes precedence over language-specific conventions. I believe that in this case there is an established preference for the unhyphenated form in English. However, in any case, thank you for noticing that the former page title was wrong. The present title is an improvement over that. Gavia immer (talk) 19:02, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak oppose English news media in South Korea appear to uniformly use the hyphenated form: Korea Times, Joongang Ilbo, Korean Broadcasting System. (Unfortunately the total sample size is not very large. Chosun Ilbo, Hankyoreh, Yonhap, and Korea Herald had no hits. Most of these hits are about the singer, but a few are about a wrestler by the same name. I tried Google News archive too, but all the hits are about a golfer). cab (call) 04:14, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
