How to... edit

I've removed the unsourced travel direction section, Wikipedia is not a how to. In addition the info appeared to be copied from somewhere. Vsmith (talk) 01:24, 25 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

They were over-complicated and wrong anyway, as they took you to Hunt's hole. Kilbourne is easy to find; just take A-011 west from where it starts; you can't miss it when you get to the dunes. I approached along the railroad from the south, from Santa Teresa Airport, which seemed a lot easier. Going back via Vado and Anthony took longer. But plan to get there by about sunup if you go in the summer like I did. Dicklyon (talk) 21:48, 29 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for clarifying this. I learned my directions from local residents in Anthony, NM, followed them, and documented what I learned for the article. Your findings are progress toward a better article. If the photo is misnamed, then it makes sense to change its name in the interest of accuracy. I no longer use Kodak cameras so hopefully my photos will be better than the 2003 vintage you see. --Ancheta Wis   (talk | contribs) 13:17, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, you were a digital photo pioneer with that thing. Your directions were useful to study, but Google maps didn't think that railroad crossing was open any more, so I found another route; it's real easy coming up along the tracks from Santa Teresa, and the roads are signed OK. There's also a bunch of construction around there, and it looked like the turn on A-014 was blocked when I was detouring by there; I have no idea what they're doing, but they had lots of earth movers, and you can see some of the work in the Google maps aerial view. Are you still around that area? Dicklyon (talk) 21:41, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cliffs edit

Is this west-side rock a basalt cliff?

The article says "Two basalt cliffs inside the crater, with the characteristic reddish purple hexagonal columns, occupy the northeast and southeast sides of the crater", which was contributed by an IP with no other edits in the original unsourced version of this article. When I was there, and looking at satellite pix, I couldn't see what he's talking about, as there appear to be basalt cliffs around most of the crater. Are there some steeper parts? Or are they not all basalt? Any sources on this? Is my photo showing basalt?

I'm hoping to replace the existing photo, as it's awful, but I want to be sure I've got the right thing first. Dicklyon (talk) 21:48, 29 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Based on the driving directions and descriptions in the initial version of the article by the IP, and the aerials views in Google maps, I'd say the author was at Hunt's Hole, on A-014, not Kilbourne Hold on A-011; Hunt's has the dark cliff only in the NE and SE corners, unlike Kilbourne. This morning's photos edit

I got out to the hole this morning and took about a hundred pictures. I stitched up some panos, uploaded some to commons (see [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Dicklyon my contribs), and added one to the article. I'll probably add more but would be happier if someone else would do it. Dicklyon (talk) 21:48, 29 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK, I added some and reworked a few things. Dicklyon (talk) 04:30, 5 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cut some excess edit

I've redone a bit - the page was overloaded with pics so I cut a few excess and over-large images (I suppose some folks won't be happy :), but commons is over yonder.) Sorry 'bout that. Vsmith (talk) 12:46, 3 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
