Dagestan region of Russia. I don't really know anything about the politics around the country, but it seems relevant that many of the best wrestlers from the Russian Federation are known to come from this region. Birthplace

There's quite a bit of contradictory information regarding Khabib's birthplace out there. Many English language outlets have it listed as Makhachkala, however, that is merely the capital of Dagestan and his current residence. Several Russian sources reference his birthplace as Silde, Tsumadinsky Dictrict. So I had updated the article with the relevant citations. However, upon continuing researching further sources, I've found that his birthplace is actually Kirovaul, Kizilyurtovsky District. This is based on an interview where he was asked and answered directly, as opposed to the third-party accounts of the various other articles.

Probably the most convincing piece, would be the documentary done by Match TV which is a Russian TV channel, titled Undefeated, which follows the family to his home and village. His uncle in particular mentions that his parents had moved from Silde, Tsumadinsky to the latter residence of Kirovau.

In the above video, beginning at the 2:00 minute mark, his father describes the same details as mentioned in the articles above. Then at the 4:00 min mark, his uncle mentions his parents resettling from Silde, and goes on to mention his brother, sister and other details of them growing up. Хабиб in russian has NO K in it, so there is no reason to have it in english with a silent K (again something that doesnt exist in russian). if anything the idiotic english version makes it that almost everyone not familiar with the name pronounces it Kabib because they see the K in front. I was looking at this article on my phone and saw that the short description was "Russian condom martial artist." Suspecting that it was vandalism, I looked for the short description in the wikicode of the article but didn't find it. Then, remembering that articles without a short description used the Wikidata description, I looked there and fixed it. Anyway, don't forget to check the Wikidata entries of frequently-vandalized articles, as they may be attractive targets for vandals wishing to remain undetected. ELABORATE on what Nurmagomedov said in his post match press conference

Currently the page only says 'apologized to the NSAC and said "You cannot talk about religion. You cannot talk about nation."'. It leaves the meaning of what he said very unclear and distorts it. He also said he wanted to transform UFC and make it about respect and remove trash talk and the context of why he said "You cannot talk about religion. You cannot talk about nation." is that he was constantly provoked on these subjects throughout the pre-match conferences and in the fight by Dillon Danis.

Oleg Taktarov won UFC 6. The article that is quoted as a source makes the claim that he is the first but not address Taktarov's UFC 6 title nor does it make any attempt to substantiate its claim.

He won the tournament, but Dan Severn was billed as the "Ultimate Fighting Champion" heading into his superfight against "World Shootfighting Champion" Ken Shamrock right after that. So what was Taktarov's title? "UFC 6 Tournament Champion" is listed like a proper noun in his Wikipedia article, but this seems like an unofficial presumption. The EA thing was an honest mistake and fixed without any backtalk, so I removed that much. But the hotel beef led to broken windows, lawsuits and a guy trying to pull another guy's head off against his will in the resultant PPV cage match, after which he dropkicked a fighter from a rival promotion. Why is him being Muslim important?

Why is it being repeated over and over again that he is a Muslim? Why is this relevant to a professional athlete? Do all the Christian/ Hindu/ Atheist athletes' bio state that they are such and such religion? I could understand if the fact that "he is a Muslim" is stated in the bio or Early life section or somewhere further down but it is un-encyclopedic to have it as an Intro. I can say the same for you non-Muslim editors who are clearly bothered by Khabib's religion being mentioned on his page. He is the first Muslim to win the title, that's only stating the facts. Or are you saying people who don't know about his religion should not know about it which goes opposite to what Wikipedia is about? On Michael Bisping's page, you can see him being the first British to win a title has been mentioned, this is no different. Of course his religion is not mentioned because he's not the first Christian to win a title. I'm sure if a Hindu or atheist or anyone else from a religion that had no champion before will have it written as well. That's not at all the same, Muhammad. Religion is not a metric or parameter mentioned or used in sports at all. Country/nationality is, as people fight under a flag or representing a nation in a competition. Religion is utterly irrelevant and has no business in the introduction. Country of Birth

Although Khabib was born in Dagestan, in 1988 the region was known as the Dagestan ASSR located in the Soviet Union rather than the Russian Federation. The region was also not referred to as the Republic of Dagestan until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Agree it's sourced and seems true, certainly a fun fact and I like it. But as insignificant in a wider scheme of things as being the first Russian. I find this to be completely irrelevant. Why is it there? It has nothing to do with the sport or his role in it. Maybe we need a vote on this. As an experienced editor and having edited more than 200 sports pages, in my experience it is widely established that we do not mix sports and religion. We had a big discussions, (admins involved) after there were a few Muslims who were the "first Muslims to win the World Cup" and if such precedent was followed we would have "first Christian", "first Orthodox", "First Shia Muslim", "First Brahmin Hindu" and would delve into smaller and smaller sub-religions where it is just irrelevant. If you guys really think the fact that he is a Muslim is so important, maybe we can have have it in the detailed bio. It certainly is not significant enough to be in the intro. I agree with puting it under personal life, but that's basically because I've seen "Jewish" deleted from leads in several articles. I don't immediately see any compelling reason why "Jewish" should be prohibited, but not "Muslim". I've always strongly felt that "black" shouldn't be capitalized when "white" isn't, and my concern is for consistency here too. We don't need to argue here about whether "black" should or shouldn't be capitalized, but it might be an appropriate place for someone to indicate why "Jewish" should be omitted but not "Muslim" if there's a valid reason for that. –Roy McCoy (talk) 12:30, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Khabib himself proudly cites the first Muslim UFC champion achievement again and again. It's covered by major media outlets and is fact of major cultural significance. He's an inspirational figue and his achievement is breaking barriers for underprivileged Muslim population around the world. But I guess facts shouldn't get in the way when a snarky Wikipedia editor is on a power trip and wants to start an edit war based on his religious hatred and bigotry. I see the argument here to keep the content is that it has got references. Sourcing does not guarantee inclusion, no matter how many references are there, media reports everything, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, so the content to be added in an encyclopedia should be carefully determined. MOS:ETHNICITY says: Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability, being a Muslim is not what defines his notability, it is not a relevant data to establish his notability either. A sportsman represents either himself, his country, team or club, not religion. Religion is not a parameter in sports. It is an arbitrary achievement; based on where the parameter is set, anyone can claim an achievement. Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity, being a Muslim is not even a thing. Religious fanatics may want to highlight it. Add as second sentence in the section: "Nurmagomedov won the first two rounds, but lost to McGregor in the third round. It was the first time Nurmagomedov lost a round in his UFC career".

WP:ETHNICITY - Dagestan is not a country but part of Russia

Maestro2016, Good day. I have place a message on your talk page but I guess you reverted my edit before my mesage was pulished on your talk page. Dagestan is not a country and it is part of Russia strictly speaking regardless how how internally Russia government term/define them politically. The body text has already mentioned Nurmagomedov ethnicity/heritage and where he was born, but altermately he is still a Russian, just like Alexander Volkov (fighter), Sergei Pavlovich, Magomed Ankalaev, Muslim Salikhov, Islam Makhachev, Petr Yan and etc - They are are Russians. Sorry to butt in, this came up on Wikiloop for me. I don't see anything necessarily wrong with being more specific about the area of Russia he comes from, I can certainly imagine many articles about American figures for instance talk about the state they come from if it's important to them as Maestro said it was for Khabib. I think the greater issue I saw with your deletion of the paragraph was that you deleted the section about him being the first Muslim to win a title. While WP:ETHNICITY does state that ethnicity shouldn't be mentioned in lede, so it would indeed be inappropriate to mention his Avar ethnicity in lede, the same section states regarding what's allowed in the lede: "In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory, where the person is a citizen, national, or permanent resident". Dagestan is a region/territory within Russia, not an ethnicity, so it is perfectly reasonable to mention Dagestan in the lede, especially considering how much Dagestan is integral to Khabib's notability. Furthermore, "Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability." While it would normally be inappropriate to mention religion in the lede, in this case there are two cited sources which state Khabib is notable for being the "first Muslim" to win a title in UFC, so his religion is also relevant to his notability. So while I agree that Avar shouldn't be mentioned in the lede, Dagestan and Muslim should be mentioned in lede, as those identities are a big part of his notability. @Maestro2016 and Contrawwftw: As for him being a Muslim to win a championship in lead section and the info is "significant enough in part of his achievements because he is a Muslim; however, I dont think him being a Muslim has anything to do with/contribute his mma achievement. However, being the first Muslim would be a different story, and I am fine with the info to be added but do indicate it in also the body text with source as lead is the summary of the significant info of the subject from the body texts section. As for where his ethnicity/heritage or which part of Russia he is from, that would be stated in the body text (like early life/personal life section) which the info is already record. We dont see XXX is was born in US who is a Chinese Texan ......... in Wikipedia lead section as per WP:ETHNICITY for Texas is not a country just like Dagestan is NOT a country and ethnicity should not be in lead section. I think you are misunderstanding what WP:ETHNICITY is actually saying. It states: "Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability." Nowhere does it say that a state/region within a country shouldn't be mentioned. If anything, it states the opposite that it can be mentioned in the lede: "In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory, where the person is a citizen, national, or permanent resident". I already agreed with you that his Avar ethnicity doesn't need to be mentioned in the lede. But that doesn't apply to Dagestan, which is a region, not an ethnicity. Dagestan is integral to Khabib's notability, as that's where he lives and trains, he always mentions it in his interviews and numerous reliable sources about him discuss Dagestan (partly due to a long history of tensions between Dagestan and Russia), and he is quite possibly the most famous person from Dagestan. Maestro2016 I do know some of the war history of Dagestan/Caucasus region and the tensions between Dagestan and Russia but that Dagestan is still part of Russan (Same as Chechnya is part of Russia and both Dagestan and Chechnya didnt manage to break asway from USSR/Russia and it is normal for such persons who are from those region want to separate themselves what the own birth country due to war/ethnicity/religion/history/etc such as ethnic Kurds or Kurdish people from Iran want to claim Kurdistan is a country; Catalonia think they are different from Spain. Dagestan is one of the 22 republics in Russia due to the ppl from different ethnicity or not Russian. So in that sense Dagestan is still related to Ethnicity guidelines here. You say that khabib won the first two round but lost to Conor in the 3rd round. This made it very unclear as to what actually happened. You need to change it to "Conor won the 3rd round. Since retiring in October 2020, Nurmagomedov has been an active coach with American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez. He currently coaches and corners Islam Makhachev (UFC), Zubaira Tukhugov (UFC), Tagir Ulanbekov (UFC), Islam Mamedov (Bellator), Gadzhi Rabadanov (Bellator), Saygid Izagakhmaev (ONE Championship) and cousins Abubakar Nurmagomedov (UFC), Umar Nurmagomedov (UFC), and Usman Nurmagomedov (Bellator).

After retirement and as of UFC 272 on March 5, 2022, Nurmagomedov is 16-2 (16 wins / 2 losses) when cornering his fighters with the Islam Mamedov split decision loss at Bellator 273 and Tagir Ulanbekov's unanimous decision loss at UFC 272 being the two losses so far. Nurmagomedov did not corner Saygid Izagakhmaev's 2021 Eagle FC bout against Paulo Cesar although he was in the audience. He also could not corner Izagakhmaev's January 2022 bout. Nurmagomedov did not corner Gadzhi Rabadanov's victory at Bellator 276.
