Charlie wrote the song himself. The shirt was just something he had, he does not have a son.

Origin

It didn't start on 4chan, per se, it was already gaining popularity and being linked by other forums by the time it got to 4chan. It's real surge in popularity didn't come until the original was featured by YouTube, which triggered a hundred or so parodies. By that point it had gone 'legitimately viral'. I should know, I posted the original video. But, regardless, there are cited sources stating otherwise already up on the article. 4chan's influence was relatively minimal.--75.85.11.43 (talk) 01:00, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

The term "meme" was first used in Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene, first published in 1976. A meme is a unit of cultural information, analogous to a gene, which is a unit of genetic information. Appearances on television

Should it perhaps be noted somewhere that this has also shown up on the G4 network's "Attack of the Show"? They had a small segment which showed art / a tiny mechanism (an orange robotic cat hitting notes on a fake keyboard, while playing the keyboard cat song) that had been created regarding this meme. 97.90.63.183 (talk) 06:43, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Would we then be added trivial material to this encyclopedia article? That is the question you should ask yourself. If we merely note that Keyboard Cat showed up on another television show without being able to cite a third party publication which has documented such an appearance, are we not permitting original research, thus violating our no original research (WP:NOR) policy? I tried to remove that bit of silliness and I was reverted. If we don't know when the cat died, the information is completely useless. It's like talking about some 19th century person and saying that they are "now deceased". Well, of course they are—that's biology for you. If we found out the cat died in a certain year, or even a certain decade, then sure, add that. But it's useless to just say the cat died. If you disagree, ask yourself: at what point would the information become useless? In 40 years? 100 years? If a cat was alive in 1984, then the automatic assumption is that the cat is dead in 2010. If not, then you'd expect to see something like: "Fatso is noted as an exceptionally long lived cat, as he is still alive as of 2010." Everyking (talk) 04:20, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

I've rewritten the lead so that it is clear the original video was posted after the cat died (it is possible for cats to live 20 years, so its useful to explain that Fatso had passed away before all this) but to take the recentism out of the death aspect. --MASEM (t) 14:05, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Fatso

According to this interview that Charlie Schmidt did with lovemeow.com - http://lovemeow.com/2009/09/exclusive-interview-on-fatso-the-keyboard-cat-with-charlie-schmidt/ - Fatso was about a year old when the video was originally made. The source from The Guardian says Fatso died in 1987 and from the video Fatso looks much older than three human years. I wanted to use it as a source but there's something in the back of my mind about the interview that is stopping me... NKTP (talk) 14:28, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Format of “Broadcast appearances” section

At the moment, the section "Broadcast appearances" is rendered as a single long paragraph. Because almost none of the sentences are related to each other, this format strikes me as excessively hard to read. I think the section would probably be easier to follow if refactored into a bulleted list, preferably in chronological order, with one bullet entry for each appearance. — Jaydiem (talk) 21:45, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
