The reason the "anon" changed it was because he/she thought "dynasty" was perjorative, and I agree. Family is more neutral--they are inarguably a family; they are debatably a dynasty. jengod 18:13, Feb 23, 2004 (UTC)

material moved from JFK article

The following material was a section in the John F. Kennedy article. It's about the family, not about John Kennedy, who apparently did nothing at all regarding McCarthy. It would better belong in an article of this title, though this doesn't seem to be organized in a suitable fashion for inclusion. It strikes me as fairly POV writing, and it's totally unreferenced, but some mention probably belongs somewhere. Derex 19:10, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Someone's stuck it back in the JFK article, I've challenged it there. Derex 19:20, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

McCarthy's support from the Kennedy family

After 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy was the nation's most prominent Irish-American along with the Kennedy family. Even before becoming famous, McCarthy forged a close friendship with Joseph P. Kennedy, who contributed thousands of dollars to McCarthy, and became one of his major supporters. Joseph Kennedy often brought him to Hyannis Port as a weekend house guest in the late 1940s. McCarthy at one point dated Patricia Kennedy, JFK's sister. In the Senate race of 1952, Joseph allegedly worked a deal so that McCarthy, a Republican, would not make campaign speeches for the GOP ticket in Massachusetts. In return, John F. Kennedy would not give any anti-McCarthy speeches that his liberal supporters wanted to hear. In 1953, at the father's urging, McCarthy hired Robert Kennedy (age 27) as a senior staff member. In 1954, when the Senate was threatening to condemn McCarthy, Senator Kennedy faced a dilemma. "How could I demand that Joe McCarthy be censured for things he did when my own brother was on his staff?" asked Kennedy. By 1954, however, Robert Kennedy and McCarthy's chief aide, Roy Cohn, had had a falling out and Robert no longer worked for McCarthy. John Kennedy had a speech drafted calling for the censure of McCarthy, but he never delivered it. When the Senate voted to censure McCarthy on December 2, 1954, Senator Kennedy was in the hospital and never indicated then or later how he would vote.

Still-born daughter Kennedy ("Arabella")

The stillborn daughter of JFK and Jackie was not named. See [1]. Bastiqueparler voir 02:26, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Correct. This from Kennedy Curse confirms the fact: Jacqueline Kennedy gives birth to a stillborn daughter. (Although the daughter was unnamed and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to her parents with a marker reading "Daughter," later reports indicated that the Kennedys had intended to call her "Arabella Kennedy".). JackofOz 04:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Derex reverted my edit with the summary: "it didn't say legal name. it also indicated she was stillborn. respect what the family chooses to call her, this isn't a legal document, and there's no need to distract the reader on such minutae". My take on that is that, if an encyclopedia is not about minutiae, what is it about? While a bereaved family may refer to their still-born child by the name they had intended to give him/her, the fact is that that name has no status in law or anywhere else. It is simply a private family matter; without wanting to seem callous, "Arabella" is essentially a nick-name. We can report the fact that the Kennedys had intended to name their daughter Arabella had she been born live, and we have done so in Kennedy Curse. But to simply assume that name for a stillborn child in an encyclopedic entry is not, in my opinion, appropriate. I even question whether it is correct to say that the Kennedys had 4 children. I would agree they had 4 pregnancies, but they only ever had 3 children. The very fact that the still-born child's grave is marked "Daughter" and not "Arabella" means that the Kennedys accepted that this undoubtedly loved creature should have no name as far as the outside world is concerned. That includes Wikipedia. Finally, lots of notable people have had still-born children, and I'm sure many of them had chosen the babies' names, and referred to the still-born by those names informally in much the same way the Kennedys called their still-born daughter Arabella. But you won't find any of those names in an encyclopedia, for good reason. Why make an exception for the Kennedys? JackofOz 05:09, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
I can't see what "status in law" has to do with this. The text indicated that she was stillborn. Anyone who cares about such matters therefore knows that she has no legal name. Anyone who doesn't care about that is unlikely to be reading an article on the Kennedy's for a discussion of the legality of naming a stillborn child, which is all that the edit added.
My position is that we should respect the wishes of the family in description. If they called her Arabella, that's enough. However, you now indicate that they elected to mark her gravestone as "Daughter", so that is what should be indicated. I suggest "Stillborn daughter". If the intent to call her Arablla at a later time can be documented, it can be noted with "Stillborn daughter -- intended name Arabella". Derex 05:24, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Which is amazingly close to my initial edit which you reverted: "stillborn daughter 1956 (she is usually referred to as "Arabella", although technically she had no legal name)". I've never seen any primary documentation of the claim that she was intended to be called Arabella, but I've seen plenty of secondary material. I don't think there's any serious doubt that they chose this name. Fwiw, I actually prefer your form of words "Stillborn daughter -- intended name Arabella". JackofOz 05:32, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

"Predominantly" Democratic family

The intro describes the "Kennedy family" as "predominantly" Democratic. This implies that there are exceptions. Yet the article fails to mention a single Kennedy active in Republican (or non-Democratic) politics. Maria Shriver is of course prominently married to Schwarzenegger, but she's still a Democrat who famously banished him to the couch after publicly supporting Bush.

That said, as a Kennedy and an American no less I would tend to object to the title of this article. The "Kennedy family" of this article is no doubt the most well-known branch of the Kennedy clan but represents only a minuscule fraction of Kennedys worldwide (who all have families of their own). I think I'd be fighting a losing battle here though. NTK 04:13, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Rufus?

This article claims Ted & Joan Kennedy's second of four children is a "Rufus Kennedy". Neither the article Ted Kennedy nor the article Joan Bennett Kennedy has any mention of a Rufus, both asserting they had only three children together: Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick. The change was made here by an anon last March, and I suspect subtle vandalism, so I'm removing it. —Angr/talk 21:02, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

what is this about General Joseph B. Colton

That name showed up just above Sargent Shriver in list of notable family members. I am ignoring that Sargent Shriver is in by marriage (he married Eunice, a daughter of Joe Sr. & Rose). Name formatting

Not sure if there is a policy or guideline for this, but the formatting of the names with the bold on only parts of the names - First Middle Last - is visually very unappealing and distracting to the contents of the lists. Comments and discussion welcomed. — MrDolomite • Talk 18:28, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

I don't see any reason to have any bold font in those names. There was a long string of major (good-faith and seemingly generally constructive) edits by a single editor a little while back. I think he/she used this format and also created the family tree section, which (unless it's just my browser) appears to need major reformatting also. I'm not an expert on WP:MOS issues here, but I'd say be bold and remove the bold. - Special-T (talk) 12:45, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Continuous Service in Congress and White House

"From 1947, when John F. Kennedy was first elected to Congress, to 2011, when Patrick J. Kennedy departed Congress, there were 64 years with a Kennedy in elective office in Washington."

I'm just looking at this statement, and while it seems largely true, JFK was elected President in 1960, resigned as Senator on December 22 and only became President on January 20 1961. Its a small point, but its significant, since its a break in the continuous service (unless there was another Kennedy in Congress that I've forgotten about...) MoreofaGlorifiedPond,Really... Recent Vandalism and Sockpuppetry

I am unsure if anyone is aware but someone with a masked IP address continues to vandalize the page and remove family members and change them to the wrongs names or remove cited references altogether. Attempts for page protection in the past have failed the same person is making persistent vandalism. For instance...

Charles, Jr. secondly married '''Claire Coliton''' (born November 11, 1935) on February 4, 1976 <ref>http://www.thepeerage.com/p6533.htm#i65325</ref>

It would be fine if it was a one time thing but the person is clearly making an attempt to misspell the name. Compare the referenes of the one above with 3 citations versus the one below cited only once, and also on the second reference it spells the name both ways. Not to mention there is also General Joseph Colton, the fictional G.I. Joe character who in the comics met president Kennedy. So there is very compelling evicdence her name is Coliton, not Colton. Because of this persistent vandalism I am requesting full page protection. 71.114.165.160 (talk) 07:28, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

    • I see that now, but nonetheless it still has other sources, running a google search of "Claire Coliton" and Burke doesn't even yield any results as you can see with a Google search, however "Claire Colton" burke kennedy do yield much more results and sources that could be cited. So all available information points to it being Colton and "Coliton" being simply a typo. 71.114.165.160 (talk) 15:37, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

National Archives

I came across the Kennedy family National Archives (http://docsteach.org/documents/192701/print) and thought it could be used in this article. Also, since this and Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.'s book "Robert Kennedy and His Times" refer to RFK's eldest son as Joseph III (which makes sense, as calling him "II" would be like discounting the uncle or grandfather when they all have the exact same first, middle, last name), the article should list him as such and not II. I mention Schlesinger because he personally knew the Kennedys and worked with JFK and RFK. Also, RFK's grandson (as seen in the archives linked) should be listed as Joseph IV, not III. 64.30.14.50 (talk) 00:42, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Upon reviewing this page, its "family members" section is rather lengthy and full of redundancies. I suggest trimming it down to just simply having one descendant list in that section. Hatnote for "Kennedys"

I added the hatnote because Kennedys redirects here. The hatnote I added referred to two likely alternate choices, articles that appear at the singular form for which the plural form may also be used, which would be listed at Kennedy (disambiguation) , and variant spellings, specifically Kennedy's, a department store. The disambiguation page also lists a different "Kennedy's", Kennedy's disease. Alternate uses for the plural include the department store, Kennedy (surname) , the disambiguation list (ie. a list of Kennedys), Kennedy (given name) (ie. Johns, Harveys, Toms, or Kennedys to refer to a group of people by their common given name), The Kennedys (miniseries).

We are having a dispute over the form the hatnote takes. I think that it should definitely include a link to the disambiguation page Kennedy (disambiguation), as it includes all possible uses for "Kennedys", and plural forms should always indicate the location of the singular form (and vice versa); while another user believes that only the department store needs to be indicated. -- 65.94.171.225 (talk) 08:32, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

From what I've seen in other articles, a main DAB isn't always needed. If there are one or two terms very closely relating to the article's topic (this page), one can simply give a referral to the closely related terms instead for simplicity sake. With that being said, Kennedy DAB isn't needed, assuming a referral is even used at all. Snuggums (talk / edits) 13:28, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Except that there are other uses for the plural, besides this article (such as the aforementioned items) like Clan Kennedy or Kennedy Clan (which would also fit as possible entries for "Kennedy family" along with Kennedy (surname) . Which is in this case why if we have only one disambiguation link, it hsould be the disambiguation page, which lists all the uses for Kennedy family and plural/singular uses Kennedys/Kennedy. And why it should contain a link to the disambiguation page regardless of indicating the department store. IMO. -- 65.94.171.225 (talk) 05:10, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm..... there is the idea of linking to simply Clan Kennedy and O'Kennedy with something like "for the Scottish family, see Clan Kennedy, for the Irish royal family, see O'Kennedy". Snuggums (talk / edits) 05:14, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
That's already several entries more than the one disambiguation link you said was preferable. It's enough to write a new disambiguation page Kennedys (disambiguation). As we already have a disambiguation page with the values listed...
would handle all cases -- 65.94.171.225 (talk) 10:13, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
I said one or two specific links could be better than DAB in some instances, though there is the idea of a new DAB. Snuggums (talk / edits) 12:55, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

(with apologies for not awaiting your response) The reason disambiguation is necessary is that there are other things on Wikipedia called "Kennedys": Kennedys, Ontario; Dead Kennedys, Kennedy's, etc. Cnilep (talk) 04:57, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
When there are closely-related topics and/or unrelated topics with similar names, specific referrals would provide more direct access to such than a DAB page would if looking for such topics. For example, The Beatles has a referral to its title album when mentioning the redirect of "Beatles". "Kennedy's" can be found at List of defunct department stores of the United States, which is the most closely related topic to this family. There is also the Clan Kennedy and O'Kennedy families. When simply looking for Kennedys, readers tend not to be looking for Strong, Ontario or the band Dead Kennedys as often as they are things related to this family. For this, I would say referring to the "List of defunct department stores of the United States" page would be better than a DAB as the specific link gives a more direct reference to an article talking about their family business. When not looking for family research, there's the chance that they came across the wrong family page when arriving here, and linking to "Clan Kennedy" and "O'Kennedy" would provide probable desired destinations. There's a place called "Kennedys", so it must be linked from Kennedys, whether via a dab page or a hatnote, even though it's not got its own article but Kennedys, Ontario redirects to Strong, Ontario, where it's listed as one of the constituent communities of this township. I've inserted that, right after Kennedy, Ontario. – Fayenatic London 13:00, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Family in list too

This version was reverted. I think that such a list may add something, for example more space for text, and regular font, more names can be added. Indenting was used. Many readers simply prefer reading text to seeing schemes (unlike me). I'd say, the list can come back. (we could add a box with vertical-scroll, or other screen helps). -DePiep (talk) 23:52, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
