Reptile scales

I got here while looking for the meaning of "keeled scales" on the eastern fence lizard page, since I didn't know.

I changed the original text "scales (on snakes, at least)" to the more forceful "reptile scales" since lizards can have (and do) have keeled scales as well. google finds about 50 wikipedia pages mentioning keeled scales. Most of these are pages on individual species with keeled scales. There is also an excelent article on snake scales that mentions keeled scales.

I went ahead and linked the keeled scales mention in eastern fence lizard to here, but have not felt enegetic enough to work my way through the 40+ other species that might link here. Ferritecore 02:21, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

You're right: this article should apply to reptiles in general and has the potential to link to many, many articles. I wouldn't bother doing that myself, though; I think it would be less of an effort (not to mention a more rewarding one) to improve the article instead, and then watch to see if more authors start link to it. As a matter of fact, I think most of those hits you found will be for the viper articles that I've been working on: shame on me! Anyway, this article deserves to be expanded and could use some references. It could also use a better (close-up) picture of one or more keeled scales... if only so readers won't have to look at AshLin's hairy arm anymore! :-)) --Jwinius 10:28, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

:-))) Your new image is definitely an improvement! Even better would be a real close-up, but I'm sure that will require some kind of expensive camera/lens (I'm not too much of a photographer). As for the text, I couldn't help myself (again). I even ended up wikilinking a number of viper articles to it. Have I become a complete wiki-addict, or what? --Jwinius 12:59, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

That's more like it -- good work! Who needs a better lens when you've plenty of resolution to spare? In this image, you can see clearly how the keels become less prominent further down the flank, as well as that the keels extend to the tips of the scales. In the future, we should aim to add more images of scales with different kinds of keel morphology. --Jwinius 16:13, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
