Names

The laqab, or honorific, Izzeddin or 'Izz al-Din, is helpful to know, but not strictly important for identifying this ruler. Such laqabs are used throughout the period, and the title 'Izz al-Din, “Glory of Religion,” is assigned to several notable figures in the Seljuq line as well as many contemporaries outside the dynasty.

English language academic literature and numismatic catalogues are satisfied to identify the sultan as either “Kaykaus” or “Kayka’us”. The former seems more elegant. Those with the requisite linguistic skills will not need to consult Wikipedia. Aramgar 16:59, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Kaykaus II and Michael VIII

The Seljuks in Dobruja page claims that İzzettin Kaykaus II was related to the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII. But this page only says that "His mother was the daughter of a Greek priest, and it was the Greeks of Nicaea from whom he consistently sought aid throughout his life." Was this priest a relative of Michael or is there some other source for this? --Jfruh (talk) 21:16, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

According to Byzantine historian Georgios Akropolitis Kaykaus II sought refuge to the Byzantine empire in 1256 after he fled the capital Konya. Emperor Thedore ΙΙ Laskaris granted him and his custody presents and helped them in order to be able to return to the sultanate and claim his throne. He appointed Isaakios Doudas, an officer in the court (πριμμικήριος) to escort him back to his capital with 400 men. Information from this point one are vague, Akropolitis suggests that Kaykaus II came into an agreement with the Mongols and agreed to pay tribute .
