Talk:Kaworu Nagisa/DRN
Latest comment: 3 years ago by FelipeFritschF
Hello. We've been discussing for a while but have hit an impasse. I believe a big portion of the article was unbalanced and/or misrepresented, missing lots of information etc, breaking NPOV. I still wish to remove some things I consider to be kruft, and to include some other things to balance it out. After a while, I was ignored and reverted without discussion. Relevant diff. The talk page is massive, but you can ignore what's before the 3O section. This is following previous changes made from the initial rewrite and others generally agreed.
Previous attempts at resolution: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; 6; 7
On removals:
- Drafts on Conception section: They have minutious and IMO puffery descriptions. They were made very early on, somewhat independently and don't represent authorial intent too well. Creative process is described here [1] [2] [3] Their nature is already mentioned so describing individual scenes feels redundant. I've added sources on why they were rejected which were absent. To compensate, I pointed out elements that were re-utilized in spin-offs.
- The director was asked about basing the character on someone and denied it in ref #9, the character designer also in ref #19. Ikuhara is not a staffer. It's dispensable as it leads to larger misconceptions, making the reader assume he was based on him, and adding "X and Y have denied basing the character off anyone" would be pointless. Source is a fanbook published 12 years after, of questionable reliability. Like similar speculations for other characters, it falls under WP:UNDUE.
- Rebuild of Evangelion: asst. director Tsurumaki did not say this, the 1st half, but rather the interviewer, another non-staffer. 2nd half is a joke making fun of the character, not to be taken as the creators' actual intention. The translator says the same. Context is many other jokes, in a laid back interview, absent in related articles.
- Characterization and themes: Another joke, by other characters' VA, in an obscure music event, quoted twice, also in an image box, which were implied to be Kaworu's own VA before I changed it. It's presented as a major opinion, but I don't think it's even a noteworthy one.
On additions or substitutions:
- Critical reception: The sources are openly non-neutral and contain other inaccuracies. They partly revolve around a fan controversy that garnered media attention in 2019. I added a short sentence on this not being groundbreaking or innovative in 1995 Japan. Though the additional sources don't deal directly with the character, they provide comprehensive commentary on the cultural phenomenon he is likened to, so I wanted to balance them out.
- Some wording choices are not consistent with official translations for the series itself, namely suki. This was previously agreed on and later changed again.
- A very recent statement reflecting on reception, by the character's voice actor, instead of Ikuhara's in that fanbook the third time (and the same quote twice) when all he says was just praising the character.
- I've also asked about a reception here, and 3 out of 4 people agreed. FelipeFritschF (talk) 01:16, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
