Possible association with the Old Turkic (Old Turks [Göktürks], Avar, Bulgar, Khazar, etc.) title “khagan”? edit
Considering Byzantine sources, Greek καυχανος, it is visibly similar to the reflection of khagan in Byzantine sources. It says “According to the generally accepted opinion, he was the second most important person in the state after the Bulgarian ruler” in the article but is there a possibility of the title being equal to “ruler” rather than a secondary title? Equal to European “emperor”, the title khagan was used in all great Turkic states while the title “khan” which is equal to European “king” was always used in the Turkic states that are mid-class in terms of prestige. In the later centuries (roughly after 13th century), both titles were used for the same meaning (khan, han, khagan, kaan, khaqan: ruler, king or emperor).
