Talk:Katowice massacre

This event does not have an established name in literature. I chose this based on the Template:Massacres of Poles, where such articles are generally named as such (ex. Częstochowa massacre). Polish Wikipedia tends to describe such terms using words crime, ex. instead of Ciepielów massacre it would use Zbrodnia w Ciepielowie 1939. I wonder if perhaps 4 September 1939 executions in Katowice wouldn't be better? Or 4 September 1939 German war crimes in Katowice. But those are not very 'pretty' names, and I am not sure what is the MoS recommendation here. Could also try the Bloody Monday in Katowice, like the pl article for the Ceestochowa masacre is named pl:Krwawy poniedziałek w Częstochowie. Thoughts? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:27, 24 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think “Katowice massacre” is probably the most descriptive. “Katowice massacre (1939)” would be a more descriptive title; I don’t know if it’s in the MoS, but years are generally only added when there is ambiguity.
I’ve added this article to Bloody Monday (disambiguation). Since the Częstochowa massacre began on the same Monday, I think it’s best to use the place names alone in the article title and list “Bloody Monday” as an alternative name.
I think the statement “one of the largest war crimes of the Wehrmacht during its invasion of Poland” needs to be qualified, perhaps as “one of the earliest large-scale war crimes of the Wehrmacht during its invasion of Poland in September and early October 1939”. It’s not to reduce the significance of this event, but to emphasize that events like this happened in many other places. For English Wikipedia, the difference between the invasion of Poland and the occupation should be stressed, because of even more serious events such as the Intelligenzaktion which occurred during the occupation period rather than the invasion. Most readers will know when the invasion began, but will not necessarily know when it ended and when the occupation began. Roches (talk) 22:07, 30 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
