Along with minimal information about Roiphe and her ideas, we have a single link, that to a piece of attack journalism that concerns itself more with "lazy research" and what the author perceives as flaws in Roiphe's character, than in the criticisms Roiphe brought to the table. Katie is the daughter of well-known feminist writer/activist Anne Roiphe. Katie is one of three children from Anne's marriage to Herman Roiphe, whom Anne married in 1967. Like her mother, Katie was born and raised in NYC. This was Anne's second marriage; her first, in the early 1960s, produced no children and ended in divorce.

Katie shares her mother's interests in feminism, female sexuality, and the issue of rape. However, Katie's take is, if not diametically opposed, distinctly at odds with Anne's viewpoint. Anne is considered one of the paradigmatic leftist feminist writers of the '60s, '70s, and '80s on these subjects, along with writers/scholars such as Catherine MacKinnon (spelling?), Robin Morgan, and Carol Gilligan. Katie's literary career has been distinguished by a challenge to what she sees as politically correct leftist/feminist orthodoxy about rape, date rape, feminine sexuality, and feminism in general. This has earned her accolades from conservative and neoconservative intellectuals and critics, and corresponding oppobrium from the leftist side of the debate.

An "Oedipal" interpretation of the differences between Anne and Katie would argue that Katie is rebelling against her '60s/'70s New Leftist/Upper West Side of Manhattan/feminist/activist/secular-Jewish upbringing and the milieu in which it occurred. This argument would make Katie a "counterfeminist" intellectual comrade of Dr. Sally Satel, the Washington, D.C. psychiatrist and American Enterprise Institute scholar-in-residence who has similarly argued against what she sees as leftist orthodoxies, with regard to feminism but in Satel's case more centered on medical health care delivery and psychiatric illness. LIke Katie Roiphe, Dr. Satel grew up secular/Jewish in a left-liberal milieu in NYC (in the outer boroughs if I remember correctly in Dr. Satel's case), like Roiphe, she questions leftist "orthodoxy" in her writings, and, like Roiphe, she is beloved of the right side of these intellectual debates and abhorred by the left side. Unlike Satel, who has settled in D.C. now for over a decade, Katie Roiphe still lives in NYC. Katie has a Ph.D. in literature.

I have been undoing Hailey2's edits, as s/he is not adding information to the article, and in fact has been consistently stripping vital information from it, along with adding unsubstantiated/unsourced claims, original research, ungrammatical usage, etc. --TallulahBelle (talk) 10:44, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Date of birth

The subject requested the removal of the date of birth, which has been done by m:OTRS under policy WP:BLP. Please do not reinsert. David.Monniaux (talk) 20:42, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

I am confused: Why should the date of birth of the subject be removed? Even if Ms. Roiphe wants the date removed, it is vital information, especially as she has made it a point in her writing (including in the articles cited in this entry) to refer to herself as a member of a particular generation of feminists, in juxtaposition to older feminists. Shouldn't the fact of her age be included? It is non-controversial information, and necessary, and it is furthermore unclear how a date of birth violates a person's dignity.

I'm the one who inserted Roiphe's DOB the second (last) time, unaware of David's removal of it after the first instance. I got it from the Library of Congress Authorities website, which in turn cites "Info. from Princeton University Archives, 10-7-94."

In any case, since David did not remove the article from Category:1968 births, I've taken the liberty of inserting "(born 1968)" after Roiphe's name in the introductory sentence. That should place her in her generation while acceding to her wish to keep her exact DOB secret(ish). --zenohockey (talk) 04:08, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations

To those who have been improving this entry, congratulations!

I made a few efforts to tidy things up in the past, but it needs people who are more familiar with the substantial amount of published material available.

Unfortunately, it is easier for people to undermine articles than to construct them.

Thank you to those who have put in effort to write clear, informative, neutral text. I hope its quality will help serve as a deterent to would-be vandals.

There's so much more that could be added to the entry. I hope, in time, people will take the time to contribute it.
