Merge from Karoo System

I'm proposing merging the Karoo System article into this one. I am not sure why the Karoo System article was created in 2008 when this one already existed, except that this one had the perhaps misleading title "Karoo Basin" at the time. If I hear no objections in a week or so, I will be bold and implement a merger. --Bejnar (talk) 03:34, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

I understand that supergroup is a lithologic stratigraphic term that refers to the actual strata, while system is a chronostratigraphic term refering to the time period. I see no reason why both cannot be discussed in the same article, along with the depositional basin itself. --Bejnar (talk) 17:59, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

In fact there is virtually nothing in the Karoo System article that is isn't covered in more detail with better references in this article. I copied over an image of Beaufort group sandstones and that's it. Just need to replace the other article with a redirect. Done. Mikenorton (talk) 21:44, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

Photo of San rock paintings in a Sandstone Cave belonging to the Beaufort Group

Thank you for this merger. I have asked Lyssipos, the author of the photograph of San rock paintings on a sandstone cave wall in the Amatola Mountains to check that that is where the photograph was really taken. It is much more likely that it was taken in the Clarens formation (previously known as "Cave Sandstone") nearer Lesotho. Sandstone caves in the Beaufort rocks are not typical (but possible); so in some ways this photograph is a bit out place here and slightly misleading. If it was taken in or near Lesotho it would go well with the "Stormberg Group" subheading. Oggmus (talk) 06:16, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Mikenorton, the uploader of the San rock painting image, has not replied to inquiries as to where that photograph was taken. Since it is atypical of the "Beaufort group" I am going to remove it, and replace it with the File:Brandwag rock.jpg under the Stormberg group subheading, as that is far more informative in this article than the present image. If however you do find a San rock painting from the Drakensberg region, then please let me know, or insert it yourself in the Stormberg section. Oggmus (talk) 06:03, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

Creating a new subheading under "Geological Origin"?

I wonder how helpful (and appropriate) it would be to create a new subheading "Events leading up to the Karoo sedimentation", just before describing the origins of the Dwyka Group. Basically it would consist of the two images: File:Southern Gondwana.png and File:Formation of Cape Fold Mountains.jpg plus their captions in Cape Fold Belt to indicate how the Karoo Sea originated. This is crucial to the understanding of why the Karoo sedimentation occurred, and where most of the Beaufort sediments came from, although the curious reader could, of course, go to the Cape Fold Belt article to obtain the relevant information. But how many readers would do that? At the moment these events are described in one or two brief sentences at the beginning of the "Dwyka Group" section, but I wonder how clear that very cursory description really is to the average reader.Oggmus (talk) 11:06, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
