Talk:Kansan glaciation

Has anyone got any sources that explain the relationships between all the worldwide glacial stages? From my limited research I get the impression that there are variations between what are at best only general co-relations between the glacials and interglacials in different regions. However these may relate to differences in results from different investigative methods between different geologists too. I'm confused. adamsan 18:14, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

This volume has correlation charts showing the inferred relationships between the different glaciations.

Both of these charts show that the usage of Nebraskan, Kansan, Yarmouth, and Aftonian stages have been completely abandoned within North America. They have been merged in a pre–Illinoian stage. A brief discussion of the history behind the abandonment of these stages can be found in

Merge proposal

If a person would look at the above publications, they will find the North American Quaternary geologists have that the "Kansas Glaciation" is a hodge-podge collection of glacial deposits, some of which have been also been attributed to the Nebraskan glaciation in differents parts of the from five or six glaciations. As a result, as discussed in the above publications, the terms "Kansan" and "Nebraskan" are a totally meaningless mixture of glacial deposits that predate the Illionian Stage. Also, this results in the events described in this article contains events and both **postdate** and **predate** the Anglian Stage by hundreds of thousands of years. The only thing that really can be done in prepare two new articles on the Pre-Illinoian and Illinoian stages. Go read:

There is a complete lack of any one-to-one correlation between the Kansan and Anglian stages that can be used to merge these articles.Paul H. (talk) 17:21, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

I also oppose the proposed merge of Kansan and Anglian. Additional to the comments of Paul H, even if the Kansan and Anglian were well defined equivalents, there is a great deal to be written about each which has little in common beyond time period. In the event of a merger, presumably one or other term would have to be given (undeserved) priority over the other. Granted there is a Last glacial period article, but what would this one be called? That article is an indicator of what is likely to happen, relegating as it does the Devensian to three sentences. Pterre (talk) 17:50, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

As Pierre noted above, in both definition and usage, the Kansan stage / glaciation is subdivision of Quaternary that is restricted in usage to glacial deposits in North American, Canada and United States of America. As a result, this article by the definition of the Kansan stage / glaciation will not contain any information outside of these two countries. A different set subdivisions are used in Europe and elsewhere.Paul H. (talk) 12:23, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
