From June to October 1943 there were three Canadian Bomber-Squadrons No. 420, 424 and 425 (331 Wing - 205 Group) with Vickers Wellington X-Bombers at Kairouan airfield to assist the battles at Sicily and the landings in South-Italy. The Squadrons came from the British Bomber Command in England and returned in October. <ref> Operation Record Books of 420, 424 and 425 RCAF-Squadron National Archives (former Public Record Office), Kew, England.
