Removal of Blatant Bias

I just had to remove this biased statement that was on the page prior to the mention of the HD multicast stations:

  • "Today's KROQ has sold out to the music industry. They play the worst music of all time. Hopefully, someone will put them out of their misery."

Hopefully this person won't repeat their statement--70.21.236.85 02:58, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

On the other hand, there should be mention of how back in the day, the DJ's used to have one free choice of song an hour (hence all those playings of Back Stabbers and "San-Fernando Valley" by Bing Crosby), but that was eliminated. AnonMoos 21:08, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't fault you for the removal, but it's basically true. Anyone with training or skills of a diplomat that can basically say how much KROQ sucks (compared to the glory years), but do it NPOV? 216.175.111.66 06:21, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

No longer rock

Within the past year, KROQ has transitioned from rock music to shitty pop music and is no longer a rock station. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.85.115.197 (talk) 05:14, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Added Doc on the Roq's and Lisa May's departure

I added info regarding KROQ ending ties with Doc on the Roq and Lisa May as it was not already included. Felt like this needed to be added as each were with the station for at least 25 years. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cass6464 (talkcontribs) 22:03, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

"The two stations broadcasted identical programing through 1978, when the AM station was sold." This is not possible, and needs to be clarified. The FCC did not permit AM and FM stations to simulcast the full day from 1964 till the autumn of 1981. The two KROQ's could have only simulcast 12 hours a day between 1973 and 1978, not "identical programing" 24/7. - comment made by unknown user and placed by WesleyDodds 13:51, 30 October 2006

Answer re: identical programming: After the FCC sent KROQ a letter calling them on the simulcast, the AM station was programmed with tapes of the previous day's FM programming, recorded for that purpose. This meant the AM was a bit of a time warp, but fulfilled the letter of the law and was a solution KROQ at the time could afford. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.91.105.245 (talkcontribs) 05:54, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Why is this article encyclopedic?

KROQ is world-famous (or so the station reminds us that it is), but I do not see why one radio station needs an article in the Wikipedia. The congolmerate which owns the station doesn't have an article yet. --Two Halves (comment placed by WesleyDodds 13:51, 30 October 2006)

Well, it's encyclopaedic inasmuch as it is factual and neutral. A paper encyclopaedia wouldn't have this entry because of space constraints, but we have no such problems, so I don't see why we shouldn't have it. --Camembert (comment placed by WesleyDodds 13:51, 30 October 2006)

Adding unreferenced entries of former employees to lists containing BLP material

Hello, Please do not add unreferenced names as entries to a list of former employees in articles. Including this type of material in articles does not abide by current consensus and its inclusion is strongly discouraged in our policies and guidelines. The rationales are as follows:

  1. WP:NOT tells us, Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of information." As that section describes, just because something is true, doesn't necessarily mean the info belongs in Wikipedia.
  2. As per WP:V, we cannot include information in Wikipedia that is not verifiable and sourced.
  3. WP:NLIST tells us that lists included within articles (including people's names) are subject to the same need for references as any other information in the article.
  4. Per WP:BLP, we have to be especially careful about including un-sourced info about living persons.

If you look at articles about companies in general, you will not find mention of previous employees, except in those cases where the employee was particularly notable. Even then, the information is not presented just as a list of names, but is incorporated into the text itself (for example, when a company's article talks about the policies a previous CEO had, or when they mention the discovery/invention of a former engineer/researcher). If a preexisting article is already in the encyclopedia for the person you want to add to a list, it's generally regarded as sufficient to support their inclusion in list material in another article. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 18:09, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

There's been a rambling discussion on my talk page about this. Here's my take; similar to Deconstructhis, but not exactly. This is a good opportunity to discuss the inclusion.
First, the list shouldn't be "all former employees". A common way to handle it is to restrict the list to "notable employees", where notability is determined by the presence of their own article.
Technically, they don't need an article. They just need sufficient references to show that an article is merited. Discussing notability of an individual is more easily done with an article about the person, and it isn't hard to create a stub, but.. it can be done.
Here's what I propose: former employees can be listed if one of the following criteria is met:
  1. They have an article AND there is a reliable source indicating they were an employee of KROQ.
  2. They don't have an article, but ALL of the following are met:
    1. There are reliable sources indicating they meet WP:BIO
    2. There is a reliable source indicating they were an employee of KROQ
    3. There's a strong consensus for their inclusion (since the WP:AFD process can't be applied to a name).
The problem with claiming that WP:NLIST applies to this article is that NLIST is meant for standalone lists. In other words, if this page was "Employees of KROQ-FM". It isn't. This page is about KROQ, and NLIST does not apply directly, since it isn't a standalone list. tedder (talk) 01:55, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
I also prefer the names be incorporated into the text, as some of them are already. It gives a better idea as to why they are notable. The list also lacks notable people such as Rodney Bingenheimer, although he is in the text. Alanraywiki (talk) 02:32, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Support Tedder's proposal. Hopefully Jimmyhtz will help us identify the notable omissions. I agree that new additions should be discussed on the talk page and consensus about adding them reached here instead of the adding and reverting that's been going on. I also agree with Alanraywiki, that prose is the goal for any article on Wikipedia rather than a list, though I have found resistance to a fully prosified "notable people" section in at least one article. In the meantime, I think it's OK to have both. We could decide if the folks mentioned in the text should also be in the list. One article I work on that has a list is limited to folks not in the prose section--we leave editing notes indicating not to continually add them to the list. Valfontis (talk) 02:47, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

tedder, thank you for taking control of this issue and providing a solution.

Question: KROQ's heyday (The area I want to contribute) was in the 1980's, before the internet. Most of any write-ups about the people there at the time are now achieved or simply not available on the web.

I have access to KROQ magazines, old promotional videos and such that are not on line. These items clearly verify these persons were on-air personalities at KROQ. How do you suggest I can use these as verification?

Alanraywiki This is about Notable former staff, Rodney Bingenheimer is still employed by KROQ. It would be nice if he was added to the KROQ today section.

Funny, I have been so focused on the "Notable former staff" section that I failed to notice three of the names I wanted to add were already listed in the "Personalities" section.

I don’t think the line, “Many of these personalities are still working at the radio station.” Is true, but I will find out.

One more thing: I found a solid reference for Swedish Egil (Egil Aalvik) from the loveline site.

I would add it myself but afraid I might violate the 3RR rule — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimmyhtz (talkcontribs) 03:20, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Jimmyhtz, I'm fine with you ignoring 3RR for one time to sort through the entries, now that we are all on the same page. We can invoke WP:IAR, as you want to improve things and the discussion is underway. I think the "personalities" section needs to go away, and we can replace it with a section about "on-air staff". They can both be in prose or in lists. I'm a terrible writer, so I generally prefer lists. But I'm guessing Jimmyhtz has enough knowledge to weave it together with some collaboration.
As far as "sources aren't online", as long as they meet WP:V and WP:RS they are fine. It's a common issue- see FUTON bias. The trick is to give a good enough citation that someone could find it to verify. Things that are in-house (like promo videos) won't satisfy notability guidelines, but would be perfectly fine to confirm that someone was on the staff. For instance, if the only source that Chris Hardwick worked the midnight shift was Hardwick himself or an old advert in a magazine, that would suffice; his notability isn't in question. If I said that "DJ Tedder" was doing the drive-time shift, there'd be a couple of problems: I'm not notable, my (missing) biography doesn't indicate I have radio experience, and so on. tedder (talk) 03:39, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Support Tedder's proposal: Just wanted to let you know that I vigorously applied the infamous 'trout' alongside my own head when I took note of Tedder's point regarding my faulty reading of WP:NLIST, and why WP:Source list is the appropriate one in context. I'll be picking scales out of there for a while. I really do hope that Jimmyhtz hangs in there and helps increase the reliable information out there regarding the station. Contrary to what some may think out there occasionally, I'm a big fan of accurately sourced and well written station history sections from right across the broadcasting industry. Lists are tricky sometimes, what I don't like to see are badly managed ones. In some of those I've even come across some pretty outrageously libellous material, that has stood, in some cases, for months. It's rare but it's out there. What's far more prevalent are unreferenced lists, consisting of entries without pre-existing articles which are quite obviously being utilized as "bulletin boards" for social networking; often coincidentally also being used as promotional devices of sorts. What I think I do understand about both policy and broad community consensus is that neither of those two editing practices should be encouraged in any way. Later on, I'm off to the AccuWeather article to start the process again. Wish me luck, I sometimes need it. Just for 'fun', take note of the rationales on that article's talk page for maintaining exactly the type of list we've been discussing here in a negative sense.Talk:AccuWeather#ListofOn-airPersonalities. Glad to see their are others interested in lists in general. I've put the KROQ article on watch and if it looks like I'd be any help in terms of referencing, I'll be back. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 04:47, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

I am not much of a writer either. Remember, my original intent was just to add a few former DJs from the 1980s to a list.

I read the whole article and I do not think it is very accurate or complete. I have reached out to other former employees who knows much more than I do about the KROQ history. There is one particular person I would like to get involved who was one of the originals and a guru of KROQ history.

I will stay involved since I have already learned the hard way how to do things here. I should be able to get you an awesome rewrite in a week or so. Jimmyhtz (talk) 00:27, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

It looks like Billboard Magazine might be potentially useful here, for both KROQ [1] and KPPC [2]. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 02:47, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

1994 changes in direction?

One question: I have seen that by 1994 most bands lost support from KROQ, for example PRETENDERS; NEW ORDER etc. bands whose tracks were played on heavy rotation however by 1994 there was a shift neither on the alternative songs charts nor on other rock formats they could chart from that moment onright ? and why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.2.180.110 (talk) 17:45, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Personalities

Is there a reason why Big Tad Newcomb isn't on the list of past personalities? He was an integral part of the Kevin and Bean show in the late 90's. I would estimate that he worked with the station from about 1996-1999, but I'm not positive. Most notable involvement includes (attempted) red carpet interviews with Jenna Elfman and his hospitalization following the "Live In It and Win" Volkswagen Beetle competition. - comment made by unknown user and placed by WesleyDodds 13:51, 30 October 2006

I would say just add him. I just added Kennedy when I noticed she was missing.RevAladdinSane 21:00, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

I added Mark Silverman, he was a significant part of the Richard & Poorman morning show... He received media attention for impersonating Sony Bono in a mock interview when he was running for Mayor for Palms Springs. The real Sony Bono was just happening to be listening to the station at the time and called to complain.

He also called the Larry King disguised as Sylvester Stallone when King was interviewing Sly's mother, Jackie Stallone, and fooled them both. The interview was replayed on the Howard Stern Show. - comment made by unknown user and placed by WesleyDodds 13:51, 30 October 2006

Delete personalities or clean up?

Many of these have blank wiki links. Quite a few link to the wrong people (rock stars and one is a British rugby player). And most of these people are not notable in the least (do we really care about someone who worked weekends back in the 1980s when they've done nothing significant since?) I know a few of these people have gone on to bigger and better things, or are legends in local radio. Perhaps we should whittle this list down to the significant people that have worked here, and clean this mess up a little? If nobody responds, I'll go ahead and trim the fat. - comment made by unknown user and placed by WesleyDodds 13:51, 30 October 2006

I think an individual who worked a regular or semi-regular airshift should merit a mention in "Past". We don't need anyone who ever did a voice or a plug, but I think the air talent is significant enough to include.AtomicNewWave (talk) 08:17, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

I also think "KROQ-related albums" should be it's own article, or we could find a way to put it in Category:KROQ_albums here, to eliminate some of the clutter on the main page.

Richard Blade's Flashback Favorites Vol. 1-6 should be added to this list. Freddiefreelance 22:12, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

On a side note, I've been collecting and gathering various logo images throughout the years, and once I figure out a way to put it on the page without crowding it up, I'll add them. --Fightingirish 16:01, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

In 1976-1977, The Infamous Era Skye (later known as Ann Boleyn, the singer for Hellion and Detente and the founder of New Renaissance Records) did the midnight to six a.m. shift --- usually after people like Rodney and before Frazer Smith came on in the motning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.49.110.107 (talk) 06:49, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Please add another past DJ, Roland West , who was on full and part time in 1986. He had been at KNAC prior to that from 1983-1985 as music director and midday dj. After leaving KROQ in 1987 he spent 10 years at KITS "Live 105" in San Francisco on air full time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Roskorules (talkcontribs) 23:30, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

I was hired by Rick Carroll in 1978 to do an Imported Music show on Sunday nights before Rodney on the ROQ's air slot. (It was eventually moved to the slot after Rodney's show). How can I get my name included under "Past DJs" in this Wiki? Workplace07 (talk) 19:18, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
