Range

edit

The range in the picture appears to be the current range of "natural" trees. However, it grows naturally over most of northern California and Oregon. Because of its preferred habitat on flat ground near the water table, almost all of its habitat is in human-altered areas, though most of the trees are not human-planted. This causes some confusion about the "native" range. Other maps that show a reduced range at least show significant area between the bay area and Sacramento, north to near Mt Shasta. http://www.npsoregon.org/kalmiopsis/kalmiopsis15/callahan.pdf gives detailed range descriptions based on both his research, and other experts. He even includes a detailed map of tree locations from his survey in Jackson County, Oregon. He also includes photos of hammerstones used by Native Americans in Oregon.76.105.216.34 (talk) 23:45, 8 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

The range has recently been expanded by a number of sources. Now California and Oregon. I've updated the article to reflect these new assessments. The range map may need updating too. Declangi (talk) 22:56, 2 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
