Personally, I would say yes. This is probably a local Jogo do pau as many areas in the Canary islands were repopulated with people from northern Portugal. This may be the origin for some other folk traditions in the area as the fife bands in El Hierro island pito herreño. BUT on the other hand, we can also suspect that this stick fight was an exercise in sword training and those who could not afford a sword had to use sticks. So it is not so easy to establish the "Northern Portugal origin" theory. As for the precolonial origins there are no ultimate evidences.
