Conflict of interest
editUser:Narrabase, who has been editing this article for some time, is apparently either Malloy or an employ thereof. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:03, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- Subjects of biographies should read Wikipedia's policies relating to editing their own page. The most relevant is WP:Autobiography. The section If Wikipedia already has an article about you, which is the case here, says that editing about oneself is difficult to accomplish while staying neutral and objective. Positive material is often emphasized with negative material removed or marginalized. That said, editing one's own biography is allowed, with restrictions.
- At WP:Conflict of interest, the section about Photographs and media files actually encourages autobiography editors to upload useful media such as photos. They are the editors with the best access!
- An essay about how to work with the rules can be found at Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance. If Judy Malloy has any questions, this talk page is a great place to air them. Binksternet (talk) 22:55, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not a company nor am I an employee of a company and have only added very core information, and made changes to avoid inaccuracy or sexist information. For instance, my mother was a journalist and a newspaper editor which is more accurate than writer and editor but this is one of the changes I made that was removed. I also consider it sexist to describe a person's career through relationships, but the fact that I worked for Special Services (US Army) libraries in Germany was also removed. I am concerned that Wikipedia would flag a BLP page and take away her login for this.
- My information on the rights of BLP's comes from Wikipedia as follows: "Subjects sometimes become involved in editing material about themselves, either directly or through a representative. The Arbitration Committee has ruled in favor of showing leniency to BLP subjects who try to fix what they see as errors or unfair material. Although Wikipedia discourages people from writing about themselves, removal of unsourced or poorly sourced material is acceptable. When an anonymous editor blanks all or part of a BLP, this might be the subject attempting to remove problematic material. Edits like this by subjects should not be treated as vandalism; instead, the subject should be invited to explain their concerns."
- I did add that my papers are currently being archived by the Duke Univerity Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library and that I'm the Editor of Authoring Software -- http://www.narrabase.net I would consider these things to be very core biographical information.

- I think the blocking of your username was an overreaction. I think you were largely within bounds in editing this article, that there was no egregious crime, just small matters of viewpoint that were correctable. Binksternet (talk) 07:28, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Binksternet,
as regards the verification asked for in the flag, I'm on the Electronic Literature Organization Literary Adivsory Board and there is a brief bio at http://www.eliterature.org/literary-advisory-board. Here is a bio on the Iowa Review Web -- http://iowareview.uiowa.edu/TIRW/vol9n2/judymalloy.php and other sources are the: Video History Project -- https://www.experimentaltvcenter.org/vhp/search/node/judy%20malloy Berkeley Center for New Media -- http://cnm.berkeley.edu/events/index/page:5 Leonardo -- http://www.leonardo.info/rolodex/malloy.judy.html Eastgate -- http://www.eastgate.com/people/Malloy.html MIT Press -- http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=9905 There are also many reviews -- see http://www.well.com/user/jmalloy/reviews.html I could find a lot more including articles and book mentions but am not sure what to do with this or how to get back my login. - Another option open to OrangeMike was to allow you to move your username from Narrabase to something neutral which did not promote a website, company, group or product. He strictly followed the guideline at Wikipedia:Username policy, but he did not offer you the information that can be found at Wikipedia:Changing username. I think this was a valid option. Unfortunately, you cannot now log in to Narrabase, a requirement for changing to a new name. I'll see if OrangeMike will undelete your account for the purpose of renaming it. Renaming allows your two-year edit history to be restored. Otherwise, creating a new name is the way forward, with the loss of your edit history. Binksternet (talk) 18:57, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. I appreciate the help in restoring my account.
Narrabase is a name I came up with in 1986 or 87 to describe a kind of writing which was later called hyperfiction. Thus it is actually a kind of writing and the software I wrote to create this writing -- like having a username of "sonnet". A literary form is not really a product, and if a domain of sonnet or a press called Sonnet (or hyperpoetry) were chosen by a poet, that would describe a literary form not a product. Note that the website on narrabase.net is not called Narrabase but rather is called "Authoring Software". However, I would like to do what is necessary to restore my account. Given the attack on my edits, it might be better to undelete and if necessary rename my account so that people can see what I did, but the other way will also work.
At the same time, I would like to note that I don't understand why a person who doesn't know what narrabase means has the authority to delete a Wikipedia user's account without even asking about it.
On another topic, I note the request for a photo and give my permission to use this photo: http://www.well.com/user/jmalloy/judy_bio.JPG Judy Malloy 76.103.174.126 (talk) 20:16, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- To address the other issues so that the flag can be removed from my page, re tone, I didn't write the page but I've looked at the pages of other
writers in my field and the ones I saw did not include personal biography, and thus look more professional, so perhaps this section could simply be removed.
If there are too many links, some suggestions for links to be removed from my page that I don't think are core to my career are: Judy Malloy ; illustrated by Martha Alexander ; (1980). Bad Thad. Dutton. ISBN 0525261486. - Although it was published by a major publisher, I'm not a childrens book writer. (The book was written when my son was in nursery school because I noticed that children liked to participate in stories, and it has a kind of refrain)
Bad Information (1986–1988) - this was not a major literary work
name is scibe (1994) - this is a good collaborative work and was written about in depth in Sue-Ellen Case, "Eve's Apple, or Women's Narrative Bytes" MFS Modern Fiction Studies - Volume 43, Number 3, Fall 1997, pp. 631-650 but it is a relatively short work, so does not have to be linked
Interlude — Dorothy and Sid (2001) - published by The Blue Moon Review but this is not where it is linked
where every luminous landscape (2008) - could be changed to the complete work (it was only part one) The complete work is Paths of Memory and Painting (2010) -- http://www.well.com/user/jmalloy/luminous_landscape/paths.html
Other than that, I don't know what to do. But it would be really nice to have the flag removed from my page and I hope this is helpful. Judy Malloy 76.103.174.126 (talk) 17:22, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
It looks as if my account has been unblocked. Thank you! Now have I answered your questions? If so, can you remove the flag?
If not, can you please tell me what else you would like? 76.103.174.126 (talk) 16:36, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- I don't hold out any hope that the username "Narrabase" will be unblocked. You can request to have it renamed at User_talk:Narrabase. Once you have another account you can upload image files. Regarding the tags, I'll tend to them today. Binksternet (talk) 17:01, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
