Photograph needed edit

We cannot use images to illustrate articles about contemporary opera singers, composers, and librettists unless they have been released under a free license. To improve the quality of those articles, contributions of good quality photographs which the photographers/copyright holders are willing to release under such a license are very much welcomed. You would retain the copyright of your work but grant permission for others to use, modify and publish the photograph freely, including for commercial purposes. You will be credited for your photograph, and if applicable, a link back to your website will be listed. If you can contribute a photograph under free license, please leave a note on the Opera Project Talk Page or email Voceditenore --Voceditenore 12:22, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please note: The image of Flórez on the cover of Great Tenor Arias which has been recently uploaded to this article does not meet these criteria and it is highly likely that it will be deleted. A suitable photo for this page would be one which you personally have taken of the singer (usually back stage, or at a performance) and which you personally agree to release under a free license.

All images of living people must be now licensed this way. All album covers are copyright and cannot be used simply to illustrate what a living singer looks like. They can be used under 'fair use' in very restricted circumstances, i.e. in an article specifically about the album, or within a section of an article which contains a detailed critical commentary on the album in question. But if fair use is claimed, there must be a detailed rationale given, and even then, the rationale can be rejected by Wikipedia and the image will be deleted. -- Voceditenore 07:12, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Future Appearances?? edit

I have removed the sentence "The artist makes his Carnegie Hall debut on December 1, 2006, in recital." which had simply been appended to the Biography on 24 October 2006 (editor unknown). This is time-sensitive which should be avoided (the recital hasn't happened yet), was a non-sequitur following as it did a discussion Flórez's technique and voice type, and seems like commercial promotion (even if it was perhaps not intended to be). This article in particular has several external links to the artist's official schedule, making individual announcements about upcoming appearances superfluous and distracting. Does Wikipedia have a policy on this? Voceditenore 11:15, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

It might be added that he has said, according to an article in El Pais, that he will not be singing the Duke in Rigoletto for the foreseeable future since it is not good for his voice. See info posted in blog Operachic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.136.112.150 (talk) 22:16, 31 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Samples edit

Somebody upload samples of him going through this passaggio with ease and brilliance into his head voice or i'm deleting the paragraph--I'll bring the food (Talk - Contribs - My Watchlist) 02:36, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Music sample edit

Hi, I am looking to upload a sample of him, but I want you to tell me which type of his music would be preferable, lyric or vernacular? --Andersmusician VOTE 22:59, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Andersmusician, Thanks for your offer, but unfortunately no sound file can be uploaded unless it is in the public domain. In the case of living singers, these are virtually impossible to find unless the singer has recorded something privately and has personally released it under a free license. All samples from commercial recordings are in copyright and cannot be used. Even 'private' recordings of the singer in performance are copyright, whether they were made at a live performance or from a radio or television broadcast. Occasionally, a 30 second (maximum) clip of copyright material can be used under 'fair use' but this is very strongly discouraged, and unless there is a compelling and detailed rationale for it, it will be quickly deleted. See these policy guidelines. Note also that sound files can only be in MIDI or Ogg-Vorbis formats. No other formats (like MP3, AAC, WMA, MPEG, AVI) are allowed.

In the case of Flórez, there is no problem for Wikipedia readers to find out what he sounds like. The external link to his official web site at Decca has many sound clips and I've recently added one to a page on the Ministerio de Defensa del Perú web site with Flórez singing the National Anthem of Peru.

Wikpedia have also tightened up the image rules as well. Please see above. All the Best, Voceditenore 07:27, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

All right then, I'll check the external sound clips, thanks--Andersmusician VOTE 17:29, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The addition of 'updates' edit

I have removed the recent addition: "Juan Diego Flórez performed with Katherine Jenkins at her concert, Katherine In The Park, at Margam Park in Wales on July 8, 2007." It doesn't belong in a paragraph about his recordings, and is irrelevant to his career as an opera singer. Normally with opera singers, only a few key performances that have been central to their career are listed, e.g. major house debuts and unusual events such as the La Scala encore. During 2007 Florez will have given 16 solo concerts and recitals, and sung the leading tenor role in productions at 8 of the world's major opera houses. In addition, he will have appeared as one of the guest performers in several marginal events such as the Classical Brit Awards, 'Saving Planet Earth', Margam Park, etc. The article doesn't need to be (and shouldn't be) updated with every single performance or appearance he makes, especially relatively minor ones where he was only a guest. The external links will take anyone who is interested in his full performance schedule to that information. Thanks, Voceditenore 15:34, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well I thought it would have been nice to add this information to the article as it isn't every day that he sings with or for Katherine Jenkins in such circumstances. I can totally appreciate the points raised, but why should someone have to go to the external links to find out the details, Wikipedia can surely offer this information to its users. Featured articles offer a wide range of information, I see no reason why we should limit this particular article. In my view, Wikipedia is successful because it can offer a wide range of information that might not have been known otherwise. People who use Wikipedia may find the fact that he sang with or for Katherine Jenkins interesting and thus the edit would benefit the article, and it was only one sentence anyway. But I’m no expert on opera.
This article is good, but relatively short at this moment, so more information is needed indefinitely to create an even better article. I also think that the biography section should have some headings so that it becomes more readable and ultimately easier to fit information under the headings. An infobox would also benefit the article. I would also like to thank Voceditenore for the communication via the talk page, as some would have just deleted the information and left it at that. Happy editing. Eagle Owl 18:58, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Elisabetta edit

The opera in which Flórez made his Covent Garden debut in the role of Count Potoski is Elisabetta, a previously unperformed opera by Donizetti set in Russia not Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra which is an entirely different opera. Voceditenore 10:18, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Voice" section edit

The section on his voice is rampantly POV. I fixed a little bit at the beginning, but it still needs work. Skiasaurus (talk) 23:12, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Now is this High D referring to D one octave above middle C or two? This needs clarification and citation. chrisfa678 (talk) 10:15, 28 June 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.103.126.68 (talk) Reply

Is this an encyclopedia entry or hagiography?

Assessment comment edit

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Juan Diego Flórez/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Comments from WikiProject Opera:

B-class. Improvements needed:

  • A little more background info
  • A more thorough discussiong of his career. The first three years of his career are covered well but major debuts and performances (with dates) after that are not well covered.
  • Although the attributes of his voice are well described there is not much mention of critical reception.
  • More biographical information (such as where he lives now) would be good.

NOTE: This article is very close to an upgrade to GA article status.
