G'day everyone. I just created this page. Australian journalism has a distinct and interesting history and differs a lot from US and international journalism. Please feel free to suggest what you would like to see here. So far I am thinking along these lines:

• History
• Legal Protection (maybe mention the recent FOIA deal with Costello and the guy from (I think) The Australian.
• Training (universities and the like)
• Figures (maybe a list of important people in the industry)
• Major stories (this would be nice to see. maybe a list of important international stories broken by Aussies that do not necessarily relate to Australia)

"Ratings"

Whoever plans on reviewing the page for the Australian wiki project please not there is still alot of content to be added. Maybe wait a few months until December at least? I should have the rest of what I want done by then. Also, is there such a thing as too many references? That is a serious question, also... DarkSideOfTheSpoon 11:08, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Australian journalists

I'm suggesting removal of this section. it is too subjective to include/not include famous journalists. Michellecrisp 06:01, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Meh, I dunno. It clearly states it is a partial list, and many other wiki articles have similar lists. I think it is an important enough section though to keep, as these journalists are the face of journalism in Australia. I guess you might be right in that maybe it should be restricted to the most prominent journalists? Would that be acceptable?

Also, I saw you put up the restructure and clean-up tags; care to give any specifics? At any rate it is nice to receive feedback on the article finally. Cheers, Rothery 07:53, 19 June 2007 (UTC).

thanks for the feedback, even a partial list requires subjective judgement of who's in and who's not. by including someone in it it implies they're more notable. as for clean up tags, same level headings imply equal importance. and things like history etc. "journalism in Australia" is a concept? or is it a profession? it's not a physical institution like a university. unclear what the entry is trying to achieve. I'm not sure whether a list by nature implies they are more notable than others not listed. Although under the heading I have apparently written it is a list of "prominent" journalists... I'll have a think about this and try and think of a solution. The article is, I guess, about the practice of journalism in Australia. In a week or so when I start holidays I'll hopefully get around to cleaning it up properly and expanding it. Cheers, Rothery 21:31, 19 June 2007 (UTC).

Cleaned

I removed the subjective sections such as "popular journalists" and that. I've restructured it so that it reflects journalism in Australia more practically, as a profession. I extended the education section and added a bit about how the profession is viewed by the public. Also fixed some grammar and spelling, probably. I honestly can't remember and I seem to still be typing for no apparent reason. Anybody have a problem if I remove the clean up and restructuring tags? Cheers, Rothery 15:34, 19 October 2007 (UTC).

What?

"The professional practice of Journalism in Australia varies from international standards in areas as diverse as legal freedoms and editorial practices." I'd suggest this phrase is so vague and ambiguous as to be meaningless. What international standards? Those in the US, Azerbaijan, Iran ...?

Also, the mention that most journalists have a tertiary degree in the field is not adequately backed up. While this may be true for 7 of 8 cadetships at The Age in one year, I don't think it's true overall. Indeed, many journalists now enter the field not through cadetships at all and often tend to have degrees in international relations, economics and so on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.132.42.90 (talk) 09:04, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

And on defamation -- much as I hate Australian defamation laws, I can't agree that they make Australian hacks more vulnerable than many of their foreign counterparts. Sure, the US has pretty good protection, but the Australian laws are modelled on the UK, so the Brits aren't better off. If anything, the defamation laws have been relaxed in the past few decades in Australia.
