It's time for a major edit & comments/discussion.

edit

I have known Redman's work for quite some time now, since the early- to mid-1990s to be specific. With the release of his newest album bringing him back into the trio formation and hearing how this work in particular so reminded me of something we would have heard out of the immortal John Coltrane, I wanted to find out more about what Joshua has been doing to this point, as he surely is entering the jazz Hall of Fame before his time is done. Of course, on arriving here I found that this article is just a little "stub" and really isn't of much use to anyone looking for serious information on the artist.

Because I'm very interested in Joshua Redman and am a huge fan of his work--I have even had the memorable pleasure of seeing him live some 13 years ago, when he performed as a quartet with Pat Metheney, Christian McBride, and Billy Higgins, a concert I will certainly never forget--I would like to begin the undertaking of turning this into a proper Wikipedia article, moving it finally out of the Start-class quality grade as well.

While I am not new to writing nor new to using Wikipedia as a resource, I am new to contributing to Wikipedia as a writer. I have reviewed the style guide and am in the process of learning as much as I can about the policies and procedures for making major revisions, I would nonetheless appreciate any guidance or advice seasoned editors might be able to provide; normally, I am doing what Wikipedia discourages, i.e. academic synthesis and promoting my own original thought. Of course, I realize that there is no room for these things in Wikipedia, as original thought and major synthesis would render it useless--or at least dubious--as a reference source of any credibility. Needless to say, I want to avoid making serious mistakes as I undertake this venture.

I will certainly do what I can on my own to ensure that I write the best Wikipedia article possible for me, but again, as I get started I would doubtless benefit tremendously from any discussion so that we might move this endeavor in the right direction from the outset. As I understand it, this is a good first step, "talking" on the discussion page of the article. I do sincerely hope that I'm heading in the right direction, anyway, and will check back often for feedback, suggestions, comments, and any guidance that might be offered.

Thanks, in advance, for the help of the very talented and dedicated Wikipedia community. :-)

Redman and the stones

edit

I know almost nothing about Redman, but he appeared on a live with the rolling stones playing an amazing saxo on the song "just waiting on a friend". Given the importance of the stones in Rock music and the "greatness" of the part he played on that song, live , I wonder if its worth mentioning in the article... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.165.200.231 (talk) 17:40, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ethnic identification

edit

Wikipedia makes a distinction between "being Jewish" and "being of Jewish descent". This article categorizes Joshua Redman as being Jewish but there is nowhere in bio where it is stated that he is Jewish or, even, if his mother was Jewish.

Can someone with knowledge of his background could clarify this? I know that WP editors who write musician bios avoid including details about their personal life (for reasons I do not understand) but in this case, it makes a difference. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 23:04, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
