I understand that a user disagrees that Joseph Williamson is not from Liverpool. Please discuss. While "the mole of Edge Hill" is quite connected to Liverpool, he was not from Liverpool according to info is from Yorkshire —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.75.27.125 (talk) 12:53, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Please see the page "Category:People by county in England", particularly the statement "native to or long-term residents of". Williamson moved from Yorkshire at an early age and lived in Liverpool for 60 of his 71 years; an argument could be made that he was more a Liverpudlian than a Yorkshire man. I agree with your reference "Cat People by county in England", although that does refer to county. I have had a little look into definition for people from city/town in England and did not see anything. This is something that I would disagree with personally, as those people you refer could be far too many and where would it stop.

I think it's worth thinking about what Williamson would have replied when asked "where are you from?" I know someone who was born in Manchester, lived in Czecholslovakia, and later moved to Scotland and family from all three place. When they tell people where they're from they're proud to mention all three. It's possible to be "from" more than one place and I don't think it's wrong to say that Williamson was from Liverpool as well as Yorkshire, it doesn't need to be one or the other.

Categories such as "people from Liverpool" do not have well defined criteria for who can be included, but the usual three are being born, raised, or living for a significant amount of time somewhere. "From" is deliberately ambiguous. Using place of birth as a criteria for where you're from doesn't make sense in modern terms as most people are born in maternity units. Because of this and other reasons, inclusion criteria for categories are left vague. Nev1 (talk) 12:46, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Williamson should be rightly thought of as a Liverpudlian. Though he was born in Yorkshire he was not there long, indeed although there is a baptismal entry for him it may be likely that he was not even aware of his place of birth given the somewhat itenerant nature of glass-makers in the late 1700s and the early associations of the Tate family with glassworks in Liverpool. As Peter I. Vardy has said, he lived 60 of his 71 years in Liverpool and any reference to him in his obituaries firmly places him as a Liverpool man, which I think he himself would have agreed with. --Rjm (talk) 19:29, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

It should be noted that regardless of opinion, Joseph Williamson was not from Liverpool, while I am all for including people on the list with close association to Liverpool, it seems a bit ambiguous.
