Citizenship vs nationality

Joseba Sarrionandia is one the the best known Basque poets and writers. He lives in Cuba, and works there. As he was fugitive from justice, he doesn't have spanish citizenship. If we have to say which citizenship he has, then the only valid one is cuban. This wouldn't change the reality: he is a Basque writer who identifies himself as Basque and doesn't claim to be spanish. About this edit [1] @Theklan:, please, provide a source to support that Joseba Sarrionandia has not Spanish nationality or he has Cuban citizenship as you said.

The data we have in the Spanish Wikipedia is that his nationality is Spanish. See the infobox Joseba Sarrionandia.

Here applies Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies#Context. "Basque nationality" is a term that does not exist, the "Basque Country" is not a country despite its name, it is an autonomous community from Spain, as seen in the name itself of the Wikipedia page Basque Country (autonomous community). --BallenaBlanca 🐳 ♂ (Talk) 14:21, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Again with the same thing. Let's go. "Basque" is not a part of Spain, as a French would say Basque implying someone from France. Being Basque is not being Spanish or French, you can be Basque without being one of them, as Basques exist well before the existence of Spain. But this is notthe case here. If you are using only the criteria of where someone was born, then you can say that Joseba Sarrionandia is Spanish; Adolf Hitler was Austrian (as Braunau am Inn is in Austria) or even Austrian-Hungarian (as Braunau am Inn was in Austria-Hungary when he was born); María Teresa Campos is definitively Moroccan; Shimon Peres was polish; Abdullah Öcalan is not Kurdish; Abd ar-Rahman III was Spanish; you have to choose if Samuel Prescott was American before the US exist or British, his real nationality... and so on.

I can WP:AGF because maybe you are editing about someone who you don't know. You can read his works and notice if he identifies himself as Spanish or not. Spoiler: he doesn't. After all, he has lived out of Spain more time than inside Spain. And his nationality is Cuban, where he works (in University) for the last 3 decades. He lives and works in Havana, where he is naturalized.

If you want to avoid calling a Basque someone who is Basque, writes in Basque, self-identifies as Basque and claims to be Basque, you can say he is Cuban, because your only valid nationalities are those who makes passports.
