vitality versus historical accuracy?

"Hespèrion XX favored a style of interpretation characterised by great musical vitality and at the same time, maximum historical accuracy."

This is an odd thing to say. Why should historical accuracy and musical vitality be antithetical? If anything, they should go together.

One of the best things about Savall's conducting and playing is the tremendous sense of self-confidence he and his performers project. We are so accustomed to an unduly "respectful" of pre-1800 music that we forget that the people who originally created and performed this music did not "worship" it. They just "did it", presumably with great verve and style. ("The best jazz is played with verve.") Whether Savall correctly captures the original style is debatable, but there's no question that his are almost-always engaging and un-wussy performances.

The original writer ought to think about this, and come up with a deeper description of what makes his performances uniquely good.

Nationality Question

• I don't understand the 'spanish-catalonian' nacionality, it doesn't exists. Only exists 'spanish' nacionality. Catalonia is a part of Spain, an administrative territory. Wrong on all counts, again. Please read Catalonia#Legal_status_within_Spain. Reliable sources describe Savall as a "Catalan musician" and we report what reliable sources say. I'm sorry you disagree, but that's how Wikipedia works. Viriditas (talk) 13:05, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

This is absurd. A distinctively Scottish or Welsh musician from the UK would always be described as such from the outset. See, for example, the article on Bryn Terfel, which no-one has thought to challenge, although the discussion page does review his linguistic background. Savall and his family have long been identified with Catalan culture and the article should make this clear. Even if it does upset Spanish fascists, it's a fact. Speaking of "linguistic background", I was listening to him speak on YouTube, and it struck me that his Spanish, while fluent, is not what I (a non-native speaker, and far less fluent) associate with native speakers of Spanish; the pronunciation is almost English-like, particularly the vowels. Is his native language Spanish, or perhaps Catalan? I don't know what a Catalan speaker sounds like speaking Spanish, so maybe that's it, or maybe this is Spanish as spoken in certain regions of Spain. Mcswell (talk) 02:51, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
