Gum throwing

An editor has taken it as his personal mission for this page to make no mention of Jordan Baker's gum throwing during baseball games. This has been widely reported on several blogs and has now been covered by the Los Angeles Times. We need an umpire to umpire this dispute over an umpire's wiki page. Here's my third party, uninvolved take: who gives a crap about gum? Seriously? What does it amount to in the world? I cannot fathom why anyone would consider it worthy of mention in an encyclopedia. Umpires are not notable enough to begin with, let alone add insanely miniscule crap like that to make the article even less encyclopedia-worthy (✉→BWilkins←✎) 15:14, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

It doesn't amount to anything in the world, but in terms of baseball and its on-going problems with umpires this year, it is a big deal. Taunting fans and throwing gum on the field so that it damages the grass and effects the mowers is a big deal. No, the media has begun to report on the story because it will jump at the chance to attack any and all umpires. Either the reference to gum needs to be there, or the whole page should be taken down for irrelevancy. Being a rookie MLB umpire does not in and of itself get you a Wiki entry. The only reason this individual is culturally important is because of the media attention about his gum-throwing habit, so that needs to be fully mentioned - albeit with a neutral voice and proper citations, as is always the case. 97.89.17.241 (talk) 15:20, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. I concur. Either get rid of his page or include the only thing for which he is known. In addition to the LA Times, this story has now been picked up by Yahoo, CBS Sports, and Deadspin. This is one of the few times that this guy has been mentioned in the media. Remember, it's not our job to decide what is important. The media is reporting it like it matters, which makes it notable enough to include here. The most recent edit that you undid was just a simple mention that he was getting media attention for gum throwing. That is verifiable and notable. It's not like we're saying this is a big deal. Page too trivial for encyclopedia, please delete

This page causes me rethink contributing to Wikipedia due to its glaring insignificance. At best, Baker– whose only fame is, perhaps, a slight notoriety from insignificant gum-tossing –might be mentioned on a page about empires. A small mention on Oklahoma State University–Stillwater seems more appropriate than a whole WP page because any notoriety attaches to the condition of its field, by gum; which currently includes no mention, likely due to its glaring insignificance.Lindenfall (talk) 17:02, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
