Is the tortoise still alive or not. Are there references about this? werldwayd (talk) 07:38, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Species confusion edit

There are several statements/articles that seem to be in conflict or, at least, incomplete (bold emphasis mine):

  • The lead sentence says "Jonathan (born c. 1832) is a Seychelles giant tortoise (Dipsochelys hololissa)" with a ref to The tortoises at Plantation House
  • The Seychelles giant tortoise article says it is Aldabrachelys hololissa, not Dipsochelys hololissa
  • The St. Helena government ref says "It was thought that all but one of the original five species of Indian Ocean tortoises had become extinct, but Dr.Gerlach believes that Jonathan could be an example of Dipsochelys Hololissa. This means that he could well be the only surviving example of that species. The other four are all Aldabra Giant Tortoises or Dipsochelys Dussumieri"
  • The Aldabrachelys article says "Aldabrachelys is the currently recognised genus for the Seychelles and Madagascan radiations of giant tortoises, including the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea)"
  • The Aldabra giant tortoise article says "The Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea), from the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, is one of the largest tortoises in the world. This species is widely referred to as Aldabrachelys gigantea but has also been placed in the genus Dipsochelys as Dipsochelys dussumieri." OK – this explains the ref to ''Dipsochelys Dussumieri instead of Aldabrachelys gigantea in the St. Helena government ref. That should probably be mentioned in the Aldabrachelys article, too.
  • Dipsochelys hololissa is a redirect to Seychelles giant tortoise, though there is no further mention of Dipsochelys in that article, except the link to Commons under External links: {{commonscat|Dipsochelys hololissa}} (even though the article talks about it as Aldabrachelys hololissa).
  • The Infobox in the Aldabrachelys article says that Dipsochelys is a synonym for it, though the Dipsochelys article does not say the converse, instead saying "Formerly these species were included in [the genus] Geochelone and sometimes included in the genus Aldabrachelys." after listing the 6 species in Dipsochelys.
  • The {{Testudines}} order and {{Testudinidae}} family Navboxes do not list the Dipsochelys genus.

Some of this seems to say that the genera Dipsochelys and Aldabrachelys are directly synonymous, while others say that some species exist under both genera, but with different names, etc. Can someone familiar with biological taxonomy work on syncing these things? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 09:40, 20 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Switch photos edit

I think the photos (as of now) should be switched. The 2014 photo should be in the infobox because it is the newest of the two and the 1886 photo should be put in the history section. UnsignificantEditor (talk) 06:45, 3 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Add Photo edit

Could someone add the photo with George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret. Its a really great photo of them all meeting him. I don't really know how to add photos, but the link to the photo is in the article under the 2015 section, Jasp7676 (talk) 22:12, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

We would need the photo to be released under a compatible licence for use here. CMD (talk) 01:50, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
