MDS?

Could anyone that knows please explain how the JTEDS system relates to the MDS system? For example, the article below refers to a "tri-service" designation system (also referred to as MDS), but never mentions JTEDS, despite the fact that it appears to describe the JETDS system. It isn't clear whether MDS is an apt description of JTEDS items at all, or whether they are somehow hierarchically related underneath a a common Tri-Service designation system.

I apologize for being late to this conversation. The JETDS provides direction for naming electronic equipment only (radios, radars. IR gear, computers, etc.). The MDS is aimed specifically at aerospace vehicles (aircraft piloted and unpiloted as well as rockets and missiles). There is another set of regulations for naming land-based vehicles, and another for water-craft. All of these are completely separate systems of naming, and not very relatable.

The F-16.net website the IP User from 2008 (above) pointed to is not a very reliable source. I cannot find an "About" page to research their background or how they cite their information.

But concerning the webpage that was given as an example, it only discusses in the lead about DoD 4120.15-L, which is the official Department of Defense list that implements DoD Directive 4120.15 Designation and Naming Military Aerospace Vehicles. That directive IS the MDS system only (latest 4120.15-L dated May 12, 2004 can be found here in PDF form). The rest of that F-16.net page is completely unrelated to the MDS because it only describes JETDS naming.

Lastly, the article David Bofinger mentioned in May 2022 mentions the 1963 system was later replaced by DoD Directive 4120.15. So, relating these 2 articles somehow would be a bit of a stretch. the JETDS office

consits of 3 people who are required to keep track of all the radio systems in nato, thay have all the radio records dating back to WWII, but refuse to access them largly becouse thay dont have the manpower, even though the records were all computerized. FOIA or no FOIA, these records will remain locked up forever unless there is the proverbial act of congress, this makes gathering historical statistics on radio production in certain time periods virtually impossible. Revision History

I added a section with the dates of each published revision. I got the dates by reading each document Rev D-F, and Rev D states that it :
MIL-STD-196D
19 JANUARY 1985
SUPERSEDING
MIL-STD-196Cs
22 APRIL 1971
so that gave me the exact release date of Rev. C. I will keep looking for exact dates on Rev -, A and B . Not exactly sure how to <ref> cite these because the older versions required downloading pdf files from a website. Brian T. McDaniel (tAlk) 19:19, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
