@Stephencdickson: A few things seem to have got confused in the current version of the article (permalink).

Firstly, while the statistician Udny Yule was indeed his great nephew, Henry Yule the orientalist and uncle of the statistician was John Yule's nephew. (Cf the mention of John as Henry's uncle in the Marco Polo book [1]).

Secondly, if Henry Yule is his nephew, then John Yule's parents must be Henry Yule's grandparents -- ie George Yule and Elizabeth Rose, who were tenant farmers at Gibslees close by Fenton Tower near Dirleton; so not John Yule the baxter.

The date 1762 corresponds to his baptism at Dirleton [2] (free registration required).

Thirdly, it is also at the parish church in Dirleton that he is buried [3].

The Yule burying-place in the New Calton Cemetary [4] belongs to a different Yule family, the family of George Yule, a merchant (specifically a cloth factor) who lived at Broughton Hall on Claremont Street [5] [6], who married successively [7] Jemima Liddell Bell (d. 1820), Margaret Swinton, and Elisabeth Ireland; and who had children including John Yule, Thomas Bell Yule, Jane Steele Yule, and James Liddell Bell Yule.
