croquet mallet

edit

An English translation of Camden's original Latin mallei includes beetle which is described in parentheses (apparently by Sir Francis Bacon) as mallet. The wikipedia article on mallets claims that a beetle has a head diameter of fifteen to eighteen inches in diameter! Most croquet mallets outside of a Bugs Bunny commercial are not like that, are they? I am going to remove the word croquet which is not in the Britannica article, either. http://philological.bham.ac.uk/camden/1581l.html Fotoguzzi (talk) 23:49, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

"Modern research" as the stuff that dreams are made of

edit

It seems the unreferenced claim about Gregerson "writing a book" (at an unknown time) might have had a rather weak foundation. There is a chapter of the same name, "The Commonwealth of the Word", here - but it includes nothing about Stubbs. As we are usually not in habit advertising unpublished - and, indeed, unwritten - publications, whether scholarly or not, without any proof whatsoever, I suppose this passage would fare better if removed, with a slight chance of return should the promised treatise ever materialize. --Ehitaja (talk) 09:24, 3 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
