Secretary to the African Company of Merchants edit

"He served as Secretary to the African Company of Merchants." I think this was his uncle, "John Shoolbred. Born Auchtermuchty, 30th November 1740. Will dated 27th May 1801 and probated at London 23rd February 1802. He was a prosperous merchant. Married, London, 27th April 1765 Jane Hislop (born ca. 1745, died in childbirth London 26th February 1784)." The Genealogy of the Shoolbred Family. This John Shoolbred was involved in the insurance case, which was held on 29 May 1780. Can anyone shed light on this. Leutha (talk) 18:14, 9 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Further to the above: "John Shoolbred, another acquaintance of Burke's in the [Africa] Committee, and a merchant from London, wrote to thank him "for the very active & powerful Support you have so obligingly given to the Africa Business in the House of Commons . . . But I am particularly obliged to you for your unmerited attention to me and the Friendly protection you have been pleased to give to my character, which has been so wantonly, unjustly & illiberally attacked by the Evidences given at the Board of Trade." (Fn: "Shoolbred to Burke, May 31st, 1777. I am grateful to the City Librarian and to the Earl Fitzwilliam's Wentworth Estates Company for permission to use the Earl Fitzwilliam's MSS in the Sheffield City Libraries where Shoolbred's letter (unpublished) is deposited in the Wentworth Woodhouse Muniments."
