Illegitimate child edit

The article states: "Since [Lady Derby's] husband refused to divorce her, her child with Dorset was born illegitimate."

This is impossible under the law at that time. A child born to a married woman was legitimate, legally the child of her husband. This was true even if the child was known to be fathered by another man. One way around it was to send the wife off to have her baby in secrecy (as the Duchess of Devonshire did with her child by Lord Grey). Is that what happened here? Or did Lord Derby publicly denounce his wife and the child? Laura1822 14:50, 23 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cricket team to France edit

The story about the cricket touring team to France in July 1789 is a classic example of the need for reliable sources. I was reading the John Major book last night and was amused by his account of Dorset's departure from France. I checked the WP article this morning to see if it was mentioned and found that the team was recorded as unsourced fact. As Major says, it is nonsense. I've made appropriate changes in the light of Major's evidence but the whole of the cricket coverage in this article needs to be verified. In the ambassador section, I think the information is accurate although I have requested citations here too. No Great Shaker (talk) 08:47, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
