Wording: "empirical basis" and "intellectual-contemplative" edit

@LoveMonkey: I see some problems with the following sentence:

His theological works emphasize the empirical basis of theology called theoria or vision of God, (as opposed to intellectual-contemplative) as the essence of Orthodox theology. He identified hesychasm as the core of Christian practice and studied extensively the works of 14th-century Byzantine theologian St. Gregory Palamas.

  • Empirical means "the knowledge or source of knowledge acquired by means of the senses, particularly by observation and experimentation." That's not what Romanides means, is it? Shouldn't it be "experiential" or "noetical"?
  • Intellectual-contemplative: "intellectual" refers to intuitive understanding, attaining vision, in contrast to ratio, pure facts. Intellectual-contemplative is theoria. Or does it really mean that Romanides saw theology as an empirical science, rejecting contemplation? I don't think so.

I've changed it, and copied a note from Contemplation. Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 04:54, 17 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

On the section Heaven and Hell edit

On this section there is an implicit critique of Father John Romanides' views and teaching. One of the supporting arguments is that Saint Gregory Palamas did not have the same stance. But let us then look at what Saint Gregory Palamas himself wrote in the first Triad, 3, 10, regarding those who accused the hesychasts of heresy:

"Whereas God, by an overabundant goodness towards us, exalted above all, incomprehensible and ineffable, consents to become participable by our intelligence and invisibly visible in his superessential and inseparable power, these people do not answer with love to this intelligible and self-evident love. Moreso, they do not wish to follow the saints who in their philanthropy guide men towards this light; full of pretentiousness, they attempt to carry away with them those who trust the saints and make them their companions when, according to Gregory the Theologian, «they will see as fire Him whom they didn't recognize as light» and in whom they didn't have faith. But this fire is fully darkness; it is the same, even, as the darkness which threatens us: it is this which is «prepared for the devil and his angels», according to the Lord's word. This darkness is not simply sensible, insofar as it is prepared for the evil angels deprived of sensibility and it is not simply ignorance, because those that now allow themselves to be convinced by the heirs of this darkness will not ignore God more than they do now, they will even know Him better, since it is said: «all flesh will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father», amen." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Templesein (talkcontribs) 15:00, 27 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
