      • Thanks. I've been writing articles on some of the people involved in the expedition: Carnac, Belches, Clause. I'll write a few more: Heathcote, Frazer, Garling, etc. And then I'll write Swan River expedition of 1827. Any information or photos of plaques, locations, etc will come in real handy. John Rivett Carnac and John Rivett-Carnac edit

Statham-Drew (2003) states that John Rivett Carnac was the son of an acting Governor in India. James Rivett-Carnac, 1st Baronet of Derby was Governor of Bombay from 1838 to 1841. He had a son named John Rivett-Carnac who became MP for Lymington and 2nd Baronet of Derby. However, this John Rivett-Carnac was born in 1818, which would make him only nine years old when our John Rivett Carnac was exploring the Swan River.

So either 1. John Rivett Carnac was the illegitimate son of James Rivett-Carnac, born a good ten years before James married at the age of 31, and James Rivett-Carnac later gave his first legitimate son the same name. or 2. John Rivett Carnac was not the son of James Rivett-Carnac, and Statham-Drew has confused two people of the same name.

I have just sent an email to Dr Statham to see if she can shed any light on the matter. Snottygobble 02:42, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Mystery solved: John Rivett Carnac was the brother of James, not the son. Snottygobble 03:29, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
