African American? edit
Okay so he was born to an colonial American and an "East Indian" mother, and yet his birth name was "Jean Pierre"? Then it says that she may have been born in Saint-Domingue? (Haiti) What's going on in this article? Savvyjack23 (talk) 20:54, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
- I wondered the same thing. Given the first few paragraphs, we'd probably consider him an Indian-American. Given the era and place in which he lived, I can see how he might have identified with African-Americans, but that isn't explained in the article. I'm intrigued. Haitian-born vs. East Indian edit
@Va23Tarheel: A Wikipedia article has to be based on published reliable sources. Information in an article can't be based on personal knowledge (i.e., original research), which includes things such as family members' DNA tests. Due to the Wikipedia policy about verifiability, the previously inserted content discussing DNA test results indicating Haitian vs. East Indian ancestry can't be added to this article until there's a citation to a published source. - @Lwarrenwiki the only thing that has been credibly documented is that she was a Haitian governess. This was documented in the 1800s by Joseph Wilson, and also restated by Allen Ballard in his book One More Day's journey. The current fodder going around that she was East Indian was based on unverified research, which is what those articles reference in Mary Emmons. But I won't put the information about DNA without it being publicized yet. All other items have been sourced correctly.
