Talk:John Hinckley Jr./Archive 2011

Alternate Version

There seems to be some questions as to what really happened on March 30,1981. That fact that Hinckley was associated with the Bush Family and an analysis of the video tape taken during the incident brings up some questions. These should NOT be dismissed and should be part of the article. This balances out the various versions of the events. Let the readers determine what they believe.

Such long excerpts, especially excerpts of copyright material, are generally inappropriate in WP articles. Please summarize neutrally. Also, when we do represent minority views, they should be noted as such. The participation of Hinckley is not in doubt according to the vast majority of legitimate sources, and if we decide it is appropriate to include this particular minority viewpoint, it should be clearly labeled as such. I think that the part about Hinkley being a cousin or whatever of the bushes should not be in the opening section of the article. Maybe in a differnet section. More seriously the implication that the bushes wanted reagan to die so that Bush Sr would be president is propostrous. If the bushes wanted to do that the wouldn't have hired there cousin. Also i think that they are no that dispecable (sp?).

I think it is OK to add this proposed content, but put it in a different section with a title like "conspiracy theory" or "alternate theory" or something like that, to designate it clearly. I've seen other articles do this, and I don't think it hurts for people to be aware of other views, even if they are wrong--if they are wrong, it can help to show why (someone can add refuting information to refute the wrong information). So I vote to add the content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JeffreyW75 (talkcontribs) 17:09, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Assassin?

Hinckley wasn't a successful assassin, but I think he should be added to Category:Assassins. Agree? -- InterruptorJones 23:01, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

An emphatic YES!. Ask Mr. Brady! --AVM (talk) 23:32, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Ask James Brady? The fact that you can ask the man means that Hinckley isn't an assassin! 71.186.4.210 (talk) 00:43, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Assassin is not a synonym for murderer; an assassin is one who plans to kill a political figure, and as it is intent rather than result which is determinant, it applies to any stage of the process. If someone shoots at a political leader and misses, that person is an assassin but is not a murderer. Thus Hinkcley is an assassin. The Cap'n (talk) 17:53, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

FBI

It seems that Hinckley tried to join extreme right-wing groups but they suspected that he was an FBI double agent when he spoke of explosions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.43.45.201 (talk) 16:28, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

The descriptions I've read was that he joined the Nazis in 1978, but they refused to renew his membership in '79 and one of their guys later described Hinckley as 'violent'. --129.49.7.125 (talk) 16:53, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Harold Covington made statements like that but the Feds were never able to corroborate any of it. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=AD8aAAAAIBAJ&sjid=SSQEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4414,3778065&dq=hinckley+covington+law-enforcement-authorities&hl=en Your Buddy Fred Lewis (talk) 13:00, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Last section not needed?

Bush–Hinckley family connections

This section shouldn't be in the article? It is not like Hinckley shot people to support Bush or to kill Reagan so VP Bush would be president. Madrid 2020 (talk) 21:00, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

This section is needed. Otherwise Hinckley is presented as a random person, with no real history. There is no indication from this fact of any conspiracy, it is simply an often overlooked fact in his story. Jocelynbeale (talk) 20:14, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Removed Cultural references

I've removed the cultural references section because none of this is sourced and none of it is notable. --Wasted Sapience 17:47, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

OK but why? I mean for example I think the song "I Desire" by Devo should be mentioned on the article, as the lyrics were not only about Hinckley, but WRITTEN by Hinckley (and also caused the band a lot of problems with FBI) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.8.187.151 (talk) 17:21, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
I agree that this section was long in comparison to the article and that most points listed are references to Hinkley rather then fictional impersonations as it is usually the case in "In popular culture" sections, but the numerous allusions to the Reagan assassination attempt in fiction and popular culture since then confirm the relevance of such section in this article. I will work on referencing the points which are verifiable and reintegrate the section.--Axelode (talk) 17:54, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
