Real life character

This article states without sources that John Gilpin was a real character who owned land in Olney. According to the 1892 edition of Warne's The Poetical Works of William Cowper,

John Gilpin was, it is said, a Mr Beyer, a linendraper, who lived at the Cheapside corner of Paternoster row. He died in 1791, at the age of nearly a hundred years.

Is there any evidence that there was actually someone called John Gilpin? Pterre (talk) 13:01, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Clipper ship

I am puzzled why an image of the 19th century clipper ship John Gilpin has replaced a monument to the reputed 18th century 'hero' of the tale. Anyone? Pterre (talk) 18:01, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Amalgamate with Cowper Poem Page

It seems unnecessary to have two articles - one to a man (a historical figure?) who we're not sure existed and is only noteworthy because he was in a famous ballad and poem. Wouldn't it be better to merge this and The Diverting History of John Gilpin with any material in here becoming a section on historicity or background.
