@Nickag989: You've violated 3RR already. You and @Yamato Revolver: need to take the discussion here. JTP (talkcontribs) 19:01, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

@Yamato Revolver: You need to understand that this is not towards hate. These type of comments from critics/reporters is not towards wrestlers themselves, they talk about promotion's failure/success around them. You don't really understand that. Nickag989talk 19:17, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

@Nickag989: You're the one who doesn't understand. That statement is clearly towards Cena and his reputation to "depush" wrestlers whenever he feuds with them, not to WWE in general. It's you who don't see the intentions of that statement and it makes the article biased. Yamato Revolver style="color:black">talk 19:35, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

If you didn't see "This is a running theme in WWE booking.", then it's your own problem. And no one cares what most people think, it's an attributed quote. Nickag989talk 10:43, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
And if you don't see that most wrestling fans blame the wrestler rather than the team behind said wrestler, its you who has the problem, not me. And that's the type of thinking that lets stuff like this get said to begin with. Yamato Revolvertalk 11:00. 2 October 2017 (UTC)
.The quote should be in the article. Is an opinion by a journalist, reliable source. I don't see any blame yo Cena, just NPOV (opinions in favoir and against). --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 18:59, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
I'm personally not a fan of the inclusion of these type of quoteboxes in career overview sections; typically, their commentary is not elaborated upon in the section and since only a single quote is highlighted, it attributes undue weight. However, I don't mind the quote itself being worked into some sort of Reception section, ala Roman Reigns. His character and booking are long-standing controversial topics and that should be covered in some capacity. Prefall 20:13, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
I think a reception section for Cena is a good idea. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 23:09, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
The quote works for me. It would work better in a reception section though. Perhaps reworking the existing "Wrestling persona" section into a "Persona and reception" section, like Roman Reigns, is a good idea.LM2000 (talk) 06:59, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
I too like the idea of a Persona and reception section. JTP (talkcontribs) 19:51, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

I'd remove the quote as there is no context explaining why Will Pruett's opinion is relevant. Is he a recognised authority? The opinion of a random pundit is not noteworthy. I could issue a quote saying the exact opposite; would it be valid to include that? McPhail (talk) 21:03, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

@108.24.75.44 and NotTheFakeJTP:   Not done. That looks like a site that has aggregated information from databases, meaning we don't have evidence there's professional editorial oversight at any point. One issue, though, is that I just Googled the phrease "Cena's father" with quotation marks and nearly everything, including a few reliable-looking sites (like [2]), refers to the guy as John Cena Sr. Is it possible for someone to be a Senior, give his kid his exact name, but leave off the Junior? Lede

The lede is a bit too long IMO. It should really only give a short overview of the subject at hand, not already list everything major. On my monitor it takes more than one screen, which is quite unusual to say the least even for more important subjects. Maybe somebody with more knowledge of John Cena and his achievements can boil it down to the essentials and move the rest into the appropriate sections if not already included? --131.169.89.168 (talk) 08:52, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

Edit request

"Big Show stated he felt the most stable to be lifted by Cena, despite Cena being over 200 lbs lighter and almost a foot shorter, a testament to Cena's functional strength.[343]"

Cena is not "over 200 lbs. lighter" than the Big Show ("almost a foot shorter" is correct though). For him to be over 200 lbs. lighter he'd have to be the size of Brian Kendrick. It might be storyline, and obviously it'd fluctuate, but WWE list Big Show at 383 pounds, and Cena at 251. Suggest revising this to "over 100 lbs. lighter" (spell out pounds? I dunno) since that is undoubtedly true. (The linked video clip does support the indirect quote but doesn't include any of the numbers). 173.160.130.14 (talk) 07:12, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Not done - Big Show was billed as weighing between 450lbs and +500lbs for much of his WWE career, thus making him at least 200lbs heavier than Cena's billed weight at the time of their feuds. ŞůṜīΣĻ¹98¹Speak 15:28, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Fine. Take out the numbers entirely then. The clip doesn't mention them at all. 173.160.130.14 (talk) 07:56, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Comments, changes, March 2019

Here are some of my concerns. This are only some of them out of the overly written weekly based wrestling career of Dr. John Cena (PhD in thugonomics). THE NEW ImmortalWizard(chat) 17:16, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

press ctrl+f to find the phrases quickly
  • I have changed the sub-sections title from The Doctor of Thuganomics (2002–2005) to United States Champion (2002-2005), since it is confusing as there is no mention of this gimmick in the actual text under.
  • Are dark matches really that necessary? Probably shorten them instead of writing in details.
  • His ring name The Prototype is mentioned first for the dark matches in 2000 and 2001, why introduce it completely again after his development contract?
  • His OVW ring name was The Prototype. Didn't Cena change it to his real name once in the main roster, intead of being called Prototype? Please include it to allow the readers to understand.
  • "receive four tryouts," what are tryouts in this context? Isn't wrestling scripted?
  • "On the June 24 episode of Raw, Mr. McMahon ordered the entire roster to the ring and declared that he needed them to all find some ruthless aggression from within themselves and that he was looking for one of them to stand out from the rest of the pack." Is this the reason why Cena came to main roster storyline wise? Please explain.
  • "After the match, Cena was congratulated by Billy Kidman, Faarooq, Rikishi, and The Undertaker." Why is this important?
  • " Cena dressed as Vanilla Ice performing a freestyle rap." and this leads to? Does this mean he always wears that and raps till today?
  • "At Rebellion," what is that?
  • "In a rematch between the two, Cena would once again defeat The Undertaker" he just lost the previous match, so can't be "once again"
  • " ""path to WrestleMania" " not mentioned in source, so where is it quoted from?
  • "Cena competed in the 2011 Royal Rumble match at the pay-per-view, which saw Cena eliminate most of the Nexus members, ending his feud with the stable. " and he also won the match?
  • "Cena was again attacked by the Club, but was saved by Enzo Amore and Big Cass. Subsequently, a six-man tag team match was made between the two teams for Battleground." what happened there?
  • "The next week, Miz accused Cena of being a hypocrite due to his movie commitments, while Cena accused Miz of stealing other wrestlers' moves and personalities. Miz's wife Maryse then slapped Cena before Cena and his girlfriend Nikki Bella sent Miz and Maryse retreating." Huh, this is just one example of the many like this.
  • So he still has that thugonomics gimmick? I am pretty sure he doesn't rap anymore. His child friendly and patriotic shift PG era attitudes should be mentioned to provide consistency. Just like it's written on lead "Cena's character transitioned into a heroic "goody-two shoes Superman"", it should explained in the body.

Apart from those already tagged

  • "He received another tryout on January 9, 2001, at a SmackDown taping in Oakland, California, this time defeating Aaron Aguilera. Cena wrestled again in a dark match at a SmackDown taping on March 13."
  • "Throughout 2001, Cena would receive four tryouts for the WWF main roster, as he wrestled multiple enhancement talent wrestlers on both WWF house shows and in dark matches before WWF television events. Through the early months of 2002, Cena constantly found himself competing on house shows for the WWF, where he wrestled against the likes of Shelton Benjamin and Tommy Dreamer."
  • "From late 2011 until WrestleMania XXVIII, Cena wore a black "Rise Above Hate" T-shirt promoting WWE's "Be a Star" anti-bullying campaign. In September and October 2012, Cena wore pink and black with the phrase "Rise Above Cancer" in partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. "

GA Reassessment

This discussion is transcluded from Talk:John Cena/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

Has been GAR request tagged since March and contains a lot of tagged unreferenced content. It is tag bombed so probably looks worse than it is, but we do have gems like After the loss to Carlito, the duo began a feud, which resulted in Cena allegedly being stabbed in the kidney while at a Boston-area nightclub by Carlito's bodyguard, Jesús. I always find the way these wrestling plot elements are incorporated into Wikipedia difficult to reconcile. There is certainly a lot of detail on the wrestling side and given he has become a pretty successful actor that section in contrast is very underwhelming (we have almost as much about wrestling fashion). We also have some random sentence about being the daytona pace car driver in the middle of a paragraph. AIRcorn (talk) 18:52, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Delist: There is a lot of issues here, but I won't go into too much depth on most of them. The main issue here is the sheer length of the article. It currently is in need of a lot of WP:SPLITs, as it's 220,000 bytes (100,000+ would be too much). This in itself is enough to fail a GA nom.
FWIW, the storyline with Carlito and Jesus is as bonkers as it sounded! Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 20:36, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Delist: My first reason is taste, the article separates his wrestling career and acting career. I think both should be combined.
A little elaborations on the films who's directing, what does his character does and so forth.
I am unable to comment on his wrestling career, since I am not in to sports. Is listed on good articles regarding the sport and what do the folks who edit sport articles think of it.Filmman3000 (talk) 22:03, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

Image

The 2016 image is far clearer than the 2018, it should stay on the lead section. There is no policy that makes it mandatory that the most recent image should be added, and even if that was the case, there are far newer images in 2020 than the 2018 unclear image. The 2016 image is still pretty recent and far more clear. May be a consensus should be reached which image stays? Dilbaggg (talk) 09:10, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Neither are ideal in my opinion, he had a goofy expression on his face in the 2016 one. I prefer the 2018 one Handoto has been reverting to.LM2000 (talk) 22:14, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
The 2018 one is kinda ugly but if majority prefers that, no problem, you can keep that. Lets see what others decide. There are newer images better than the 2018 one and the 2016 one is more similar to what John Cena looks like than the 2018 one which he looked like for a very short time. Still as the 2018 is used in the John Cena wikipedias of other language versions and it will be difficult to change all, let it stay. Dilbaggg (talk) 05:07, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

China and Taiwan topic

It's says that John Cena was involved in a meme over china and Taiwan. No he made a apology to China over saying Taiwan was a country and that lead to many news and other shows saying it was wrong. It should say that because it's not a meme. Saying it's a meme is making what he said was a joke when it hurt alot of people. Joshua Stiltner (talk) 02:45, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Is someone able to add the below YouTube link as a citation to the below portion of the article?

"After the match, he was congratulated by Billy Kidman, Faarooq, Rikishi, and The Undertaker.[citation needed]"

Bing Chilling 👱🏻🍦

One of his videos abut him speaking Mandarian and eating ice cream became a meme so notable a news article was written about it. It was for an ad for the Fast and Furious movie that was coming up but quickly grown an additional life on the internet. This included photoshopped images of him as a stereotypical Chinese racial stereotype and many parodies on YouTube.[1] In addition a reference to the promotion was made in a controversial game called Ready or Not, leading to the developers being fired.[2][3] Lmharding (talk) 09:56, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Yeah the Bing Chilling meme was so funny. Gavinvin13 (talk) 04:59, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

hes been hosting the wipeout reboot since 04.01.2021

shouldnt "game show host" or something wipeouty be added to his credentials? Snarevox (talk) 11:13, 10 September 2022 (UTC)

not that my personal opinion holds any weight here, but i think hes hilarious in this, he doesnt take himself too seriously, and it very well could be one of the best things hes ever done. Snarevox (talk) 10:27, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Comeback to wwe

I think one of the most memorable moments about WWE was the comeback of John Cena. I was surprised to see the video.

Even though he lost, he still is the most best WWE superstar of all time. 16 champions tied with Ric Flair? Woo! Gavinvin13 (talk) 02:25, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Mixed reactions

Should John Cena's Wikipedia page contain a "Persona, reception, and legacy" section similar to Roman Reigns' Wikipedia page, given that - like Roman Reigns - John Cena often received a mixed-to-negative reaction from the WWE fanbase at live events? Gurzyb (talk) 23:39, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

wwe games

wouldnt it just be simpler to list all of them as one line under wwe video games and then say in notes 50 games or whatever it is seems needless to list so many when its just yearly wwe games and some spin offs. can list it as

Year Title Note
2003-present WWE video games 35 games
