John Brevard is an American architect, artist and designer known for his ecologically conscious and metaphysically inspired work. His works include drawings, paintings, installations, sculptures, product and furniture design combining sacred geometries with materials such as steel, petrified wood and other natural minerals.

Background, Early Life and Experiences

edit

Brevard was born and raised in Miami and is a seventh generation Floridian. His descendants include important political figures dating back to the 18th century. His great-great grandfather, Governor Richard Keith Call, acted as lieutenant and personal aide to President Andrew Jackson while his grandmother Mary Call Darby Collins was widely considered to be “Florida’s First Lady,” and grandfather Governor Leroy Collins, was highly active in the civil rights movement of the 1960’s and was responsible for the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy, as chairman of the Democratic National Convention.

At the age of 14, Brevard survived a near death experience when stricken with a combination of encephalitis and meningitis. This led to his lifelong fascination with human consciousness and its connection to the natural world. Years later, while studying architecture at the University of Florida, Brevard traveled to Peru where he partook in ancient customs with the Shipibo Tribe including rituals with the ayahuascero shaman, Pablo Amaringo. This experience inspired Brevard to expand his focus to include art and sculpture as well.

Series

edit

Brevard’s first series, Black and White: The Death of the False Self (2001) is a collection of illustrations depicting faces and surrealistic landscapes seemingly melting into each other. His Nonduality series (2005) shows an array of functional bronze sculptures. The Petrified Wood series (2007) consists of sculptures, installations and furniture created using the juxtaposition of manufactured steel and million year old petrified woods. Brevard is currently working on his latest series, untitled as of yet.

Brevard currently splits his time between NYC and Miami and maintains a professional studio in Coral Gables, Florida as well as a gallery in Miami’s Design District where he donates 10 percent of all proceeds to sustainable organizations.
