Potential sources for this article
In many countries, layoffs are regulated by law and/or collective agreements. This is generally called "job security" or "employment protection" and a comparison between different countries in this respect would be very interesting. In the EU, the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (www.eurofound.eu.int) publishes comparative studies and continuously monitors developments in the area. Some useful Foundation sources for this article might include
- The Comparative overview of industrial relations in Europe in 2003 (the latest available yearly report), with sections on job security and legislative developments
- The EMIRE database, which explains the national industrial relations systems of the EU member states through their terminology - see, for example, these texts on employment protection in Germany, Austria and Finland
- News reports about trends and changes in specific countries, such as this text on the growth of job security agreements in the UK
