I have noticed that a number of editors insist that this player is "Japanese," even though he was born in the United States and has never represented Japan. Indeed, the only proof we have of his citizenship and/or nationality is his birth in the United States. Furthermore, long-established consensus at WP:FOOTY holds that a secondary nationality is established only after the player represents that nation. Sumiyoshi has never represented Japan at any level. Additionally, if he were to represent Japan, the lede would maintain an ambiguous nationality rather than revert to Japanese. Can I get clarification about why several editors want to treat Sumiyoshi different than other players and go against long-established consensus concerning his nationality?
