Flemish or French? edit

Is there any evidence that he was Flemish? Name and career suggest Francophone. Flexural strength (talk) 06:31, 6 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

  1. http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/daret_jean.html describes him as Flemish. So does http://www.mutualart.com/Artist/Jean-Daret/71DD5F711342A7DD. So does "Cezanne's Early Imagery", by Mary Tompkins Lewis. http://en.aixenprovencetourism.com/aix-aixois-autres.htm says that he was born in Brussels, which is in Flanders.
  2. "Francophone" means French speaking, and says nothing about his origin. To say that he was Flemish means that he was a native of Flanders, not that he was a native speaker of the Flemish language. "Welsh" is not synonymous with "Welsh speaking", and in fact most people from Wales don't speak Welsh; "English" is not synonymous with "English speaking", and in fact most English speaking people are not English. However, if you do for some reason regard the language he spoke as relevant, in the seventeenth century virtually all of the population of Brussels spoke Flemish.
  3. What would you guess would be the native language and nationality of someone named "Sarkozy"? What would you guess would be the native language and nationality of someone named "Barack Obama"? A person's name is not, and never has been, a reliable guide either to their native language, to their place of origin, or to their nationality. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:22, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
