There Is Nothing Straightforward About Nattier's Portraits

"Straightforward portraiture"? Nattier is famous for creating the genre of "portrait historié" which meant depicting rich but past-their-prime women in a very flattering and historicising way—and always endowed with enormous bosoms [1]. Calling this style "strightforward" is like calling Les Demoiselles d'Avignon realistic and detailed—I just don't get it. Maikel 12:53, 15 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
