"based on the design of the Sun SPARCstation series" ??

edit

What, in the sense that it had a SPARC CPU? Other resemblances seem pretty minimal. You could plug a keyboard, mouse, and monitor into it, too; I guess maybe that counts, but the article points out it didn't even use the same connectors for these as Sun workstations did. I mercifully can't remember: did they even have OBP? Maybe they did, as it suddenly occurs to me it must have downloaded its OS from the net -- which means maybe it looked more like the old Sun X Terminal than anything. (which doesn't appear to have its own WP article yet, btw...)

Maybe I'm conflating with Sun Ray, but I thought the mobo for the JavaStation was fairly original; it would've had to have been to fit into the mini lunchbox and Mr. Coffee enclosures.--NapoliRoma (talk) 22:33, 19 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, read up a bit and answered/corrected some of my own questions. Yes, they did have OBP, and they were close enough in function to a SPARCstation that people have figured out how to boot Linux on 'em... which I'd have seen links to if I'd read the article more closely. I also might've reminded myself that the mini lunchbox was "Mr. Coffee"; the next-gen avant garde design was codenamed "Krups."--NapoliRoma (talk) 06:17, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

JavaOS

edit

Did these machines exclusively use JavaOS, as referred to in Sun performance and tuning: Java and the Internet? Thanks. --Trevj (talk) 14:53, 9 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

As the article indicates, JavaOS was their native OS, although Linux and NetBSD were also ported to run on them. Letdorf (talk) 20:00, 9 June 2011 (UTC).Reply
Thanks - sorry for not really reading it. Presumably because of the processor, they were unable to run NCOS, which required an ARM processor. Is this right? Thanks. --Trevj (talk) 11:05, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
NCOS was developed by Acorn for the Acorn/Oracle NC reference design, and was specifically an ARM OS. So not of much relevance to Sun, really. Regards, Letdorf (talk) 11:48, 11 June 2011 (UTC).Reply
