It's written here that Akihito using colloquial language signifies equality. However, the standard pattern of speaking to a superior is to use keigo, whilst the superior "talks down" to you using colloquial language.

@Kintetsubuffalo: you tagged this for essay-like in 2011. I've removed a weird, unsourced POV paragraph and got rid of the tag. The rest of the article is simply a copy from the LOC Country Study.
