User:Iryna Harpy, your disruptive reversion did also restore some citation errors I had repaired. Thank you very much. The explanation for your image eviration is simply absurd. How can you pretend one image to be representative of "the history and culture that define what being 'Japanese people' actually means" Who said that an image should typify, or define culture and history of an entire nation? I choose that image for its freshness, for its normality. It is quite a good snapshot of every day life. I would have kindly accepted any change of image but not your obliteration. Your iconoclastic cuts are completely unjustifiable and have no place in a multimedia encyclopedia. Please restore the page as it was. Carlotm (talk) 07:59, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

I've restored the citation fix per your request. As for the image of a modern Japanese family, it is your WP:PPOV choice. Find consensus for the use of the image. My WP:PPOV is that it isn't edifying in the least. There isn't even a section on contemporary Japanese people in the article. What, exactly, does it inform the reader of other than the fact that they look like people from any modern, developed country? How is it edifying for the reader? It would also serve you well to remind yourself of WP:NPA. I'm not interested in breaching WP:CIVIL in my communications with you because we disagree about content. This talk page is for discussion, therefore the onus is on you to present a policy and guideline argument for the introduction of this content.

Why should I find consensus for my so-called WP:PPOV? For putting an image on a page? Meanwhile, your so-called WP:PPOV seems to be shifting. First it was about culture and history, now it's about reader's edification. Tell me; what's wrong with the fact "that they look like people from any modern, developed country?" Be clear: what do you want from me? That I put a new image each day and see if, someday, my choice coincides with your feelings? No way, you are here only to remove. No positive suggestions, no alternate images, nothing; only "iconoclastic cuts", which is not a personal attack but a precise assessment of your violent actions. I am not convinced with this removing. Many articles about ethnic group, especially indigenous people, introduce images of people with folk ceremonial costumes. --Kyoww (talk) 04:33, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

Explanation

Does somebody know the meaning of the acronym "JPT" (last sentence in Y-chromosome DNA section)? Its likely explanation ("Japanese in Tokyo, Japan") looks like to be too generic. The next section seems to propose another definition: "Tokyo metropolitan area". Carlotm (talk) 23:29, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

According to this website, JPT simply stands for "Japanese in Tokyo, Japan." The Coriell Institute's website has described the cell lines and DNA samples labeled as JPT as having been "collected in the Tokyo metropolitan area." It also states that "[a]ll of the samples are from unrelated individuals." It goes further to say: "Because it is considered culturally insensitive in Japan to inquire specifically about a person's ancestral origins, prospective donors were simply told that the general aim was to include samples from people whose grandparents were all from Japan. The samples were collected from people who came from (or whose ancestors presumably came from) many different parts of Japan. Thus, this set of samples can be viewed as generally representative of the majority population in Japan." It is also noted that the "Principal Investigator for Community Engagement and Sample Collection" is a certain Ichiro Matsuda, Health Sciences University of Hokkaido, Japan. "Nation and ethnic group" then speaks about their divisions.

According to the lead the Japanese are a single ethnic group but then later the article describes the Yamato, Ainu, and Ryukyuans as distinct people within Japan. Either "nation" and "ethnic group" mean nationality or the article is inconsistent. --Donald Trung (talk) 12:08, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

"Japanese people" (日本人) is purely a nationality, but in English it has the secondary meaning of the Yamato people, who are the actual ethnic group that English considers "the Japanese". I think we should disambiguate the two phrases even more within this article and limit the ethnic label to Yamato to clear up confusion. ミーラー強斗武 (StG88ぬ会話) 07:42, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Odd claim about ethnicity

The following sentence is incoherent: "Since the Japanese population census asks the people's nationality rather than their ethnic background, naturalized Japanese citizens and Japanese nationals with multi-ethnic background are considered to be ethnically Japanese in the population census of Japan."

Well, no. The census asks about nationality, and therefore the statistics it has about nationality are statistics about nationality, and not about ethnicity. Unless there is a cite which demonstrates that somehow the census claims to be determining ethnicity, this should surely go. Imaginatorium (talk) 19:29, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
