Talk:Japanese Village, Knightsbridge

Coincidence edit

By one of those coincidences which affect us all, I note that a book has recently been written on the Japanese Village by Sir Hugh Cortazzi, formerly the UK ambassador to Japan just as we start work on this article. A review of the book can be read at http://www.japansociety.org.uk/9203/japan-in-late-victorian-london-the-japanese-native-village-in-knightsbridge-and-the-mikado-1885/ and apparently Sir Hugh is giving a talk on the subject at the Japanese Embassy in London on the 25th February. That would have been interesting to attend if only I could have. Ah well, -- Derek Ross | Talk 03:02, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just mentioned this new book to SavoyNet. No doubt it will be of interest to all the "completist" G&S collectors and lots of Mikado fans (er, no pun intended). -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:37, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure you're right. The book doesn't seem to be available through the major booksellers though. Or not yet anyway. I suppose that people will have to order it via the Sainsbury Institute. -- Derek Ross | Talk 00:04, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Times archive edit

The Times archive contains some excellent material in the form of short articles and advertisements which would help to flesh out this article. For instance it appears that the intention to attend the Berlin exhibition was taken well before the fire occurred. Some of that material has been reproduced here-- Derek Ross | Talk 21:53, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Excellent. When you have a chance, go ahead. I'll be happy to proofread and help with ref formatting, etc. if needed. We should, indeed, link to victorianlondon.org. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:13, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Will do. -- Derek Ross | Talk 22:32, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Location of the exhibition edit

Humphreys' Hall has long since been redeveloped. However its location was approximately here. I base that guess on the fact that Humphreys' Hall was next door to the Sun Music Hall which was located at 26 Knightsbridge High St and that this is a photo of 28 & 30 Knightsbridge which is, curiously enough, now occupied by a Japanese restaurant. -- Derek Ross | Talk 00:36, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Similar Exhibition in New York edit

According to the New York Times a similar exhibition opened at Madison Square Gardens, New York on 4th Dec 1885. -- Derek Ross | Talk 06:14, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
