i wrote this stub because I am a bit of a fan of this man, and there was nothing on him here. I grabbed some of the information from http://www2.marianopolis.edu/quebechistory/bios/jamestshotwell.htm but i don't think I've plagiarised any. I also find shotwell's role in advancing the idea that ECOSOC should accredit NGOs in an advisory capacity fascinating - but this is proably not the place to discuss this. The "Shotwell Cottage" as it was known was on an hill top on 700 acres near Woodstock, New York. My mother's uncle Dr. Wendel Ter Bush, also a Columbia University professor, arranged for her family to stay there one summer while Shotwell was in Europe. I visited the "cottage" with its two stairways wide veranda trout stream and views with my parents in the early 60's.
