Difficulty finding sources

edit

My internet snooping uncovered very little about this man, apart from this article from Chicago Tribune

Quote about courage

edit

The article shuld probably mention the following quote, which is likely to be what he is most famous for: "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than one's fear."

Six Day School

edit

According to a news item in a local Marin County newspaper ("Band Festival on Mountain Draws Crowd", The Daily Independent Journal, San Rafael CA, July 3, 1967, p.6) the director of the Six-Day School was "Andrew" Hollingsworth. Evidently this was the paper's garbling of "Ambrose". According to this article, the school "teaches the ways of the occult"; Hollingsworth told local officials investigating possible zoning violations that about 12 people gathered at the house each evening for study, while Martha Wenner told the Independent-Journal that the school taught "Life, Love and Wisdom" to students aged 18 to 30, and that 84 students had enrolled. It was at that time located in a big ranch-style house on Toyon Drive in Fairfax, but they were already planning to move it to Top of the World Ranch near Glen Ellen, in Sonoma County. The treasurer of the school, according to the article, was Martha Wenner, who was Jann Wenner's little sister and at that time only 18 years old. She called herself "Merlyn", lived in a teepee and taught astrology and the I Ching, according to the recent book Sticky Fingers. The school put on a rock festival on Mount Tamalpais that included Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe and the Fish, Sandy Bull, and the Congress of Wonders. This was a followup to a rock concert a year earlier in 1966 at Muir Beach which was a fundraiser to pay Ambrose Hollingworth's hospital bills, featuring Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and other bands. He also wrote an astrology column for Rolling Stone starting in May 1969 that lasted for about a year, also wrote some pieces that ran in the San Francisco Oracle and Oz.

Here is a course listing for a class at the Six Day School. I found it in the June(?) 1968 issue of Synergy, a newsletter put out by the San Franscisco Public Library Reference Dept.

Six Day School, 46XX Cavedale Rd . , Glen Ellen, Calif. 95442 (707) 996-86XX.

Sidereal Astrology. Tarot - Astrology - Kabbalah I, II and III

There is no fee, but anyone interested in attending the classes must be registered. Spring semester in session until May 24. The second course listed is based on the premise that the Tarot, Astrology and the Kabbalah constitute the three point foundation of the Western esoteric tradition and also upon the premise that not one of the systems can be thoroughly understood and utilized without a knowledge of the other two. The several systems of corresponding relationships and interaction among the three are explored.

Conflict of primary vs. secondary sources on middle name

edit

We have an interesting situation here. Ancestry.com shows a 1950 high school yearbook photo, from the small town of Hollingworth's birth, Painsville, for a James Neal Hollingworth. All rhe reliable sources spell his name as Neil. Not sure how to handle this but to me this indicates the secondary sources are wrong. I can find no other primary sources on Ancestry to resolve the matter. No birth records, no death records. Limited secondary sources. He was a beat poet and lived off the grid, so no SSDI information. Coretheapple (talk) 20:06, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
