Birth date edit

I noticed User:GiantSnowman corrected Garvey's birth date to 1880 earlier today, but I can't find any references to support this. Michael Joyce's "Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939" gives his DOB as occuring in the first quarter of 1878, and this is supported by Garth Dykes' respected work "The United Alphabet". Is it possible that there was another footballer called James Garvey born in 1880? The only other James Garvey listed in Joyce is Scottish and born in 1919. – PeeJay 18:06, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, the Terry Frost book cited gives the 1880 year of birth. So either somebody is mistaken, or we have two players called James Garvey who were both goalkeepers born in Hulme - one born 1878 who played for Wigan County and Manchester United, and one born 1880 who played for Southport and Bradford City. Also note at the time of my edit the 1878 birth year was not supported by any sources - the 'MUFCinfo' website does not give any DOB. GiantSnowman 18:16, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also doesn't Dykes give both dates? Your edit summary earlier stated that he describes the player as being 20 when he signed for Newton Heath in 1900, giving a 1880 year of birth. GiantSnowman 18:22, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification regarding Frost; I haven't got that book, so I couldn't check it myself. Dykes gives an explicit birth date of "January qtr. 1878", but later says "he joined Newton Heath as a 20 year-old", from which - with the date he joined Newton Heath - we can extrapolate that he may actually have been born in 1880; however, this isn't stated outright - it could just be a typo. I've found a record on FreeBMD that states that a James Patrick Garvey was born between January and March 1878, registered in the district of Chorlton (where Hulme is). – PeeJay 18:32, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I presume there must be an early source that gives 1880, given that Frost and Dykes both use that - but seeing as Dykes gives a more explicit date, supported by Joyce and your own personal research, I'm happy to go with the 1878 date. GiantSnowman 18:38, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
What exactly is the wording relating to Garvey's DOB in Frost, if you don't mind me asking? – PeeJay 18:46, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's a table format, page 396, there's a column for name, position, place of birth, year of birth, previous club (and when joined Bradford City) and next club (and when they left Bradford City). Garvey's entry is GARVEY J | G | Hulme 1880 | Southport C Feb 1905 | Retired (injury) Nov 1905. GiantSnowman 19:06, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
