Talk:James Francis Garrick

DYK

Submitted for the Did you know (DYK) section of the homepage, together with Garrick's brother. The DYK hook is based on the fact that his brother is called Francis James, i.e. the first and middle name are transposed. I'm aware that on all pages that had a redlink, the person is listed as James Garrick. Can I propose that the page not be moved, but left as James Francis Garrick? There's less risk of confusion this way given that his brother has this similar name. I've got a redirect from James Garrick to this page. If the proposal is accepted, I'd be happy to update all the links that currently come via the redirect.

I hope you Aussies appreciate a Kiwi (of German descent at that) writing an article about one of your politicians. Schwede66 04:59, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Oxford Military College

User:Victoriaedwards added the following sentence to the section 'Political career': "He was a councillor of the Oxford Military College in Cowley and Oxford Oxfordshire from 1876-1896."

I have removed this sentence for the following reasons:

• It obviously has nothing to do with his political career, so doesn't belong into that section.
• I can't see how somebody can be a councillor for an English college while living in Australia.
• In addition to the above, no reference is given (which by itself is of course no valid reason to remove the sentence, but in conjunction with the first two points, it is).

The Oxford Military College had councillors (better known today as Governors) in the Colonies and offered Colonial scholarships to the military college. At the time, it was seen as important to offer a few spaces in each of the key colonies for a few students, 14-18 years of age. I agree that the location is problematic. Garrick was a councillor due to his political position in Australia. I am open, however, to relocating or deleting the material. The reference is back on the Oxford Military College site with more detail under colonial scholarships. Victoriaedwards (talk) 18:06, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I see – thanks for your reply. It may be best to start a new section (after legal career) for this, or amend legal career to read 'Legal career and other activities' or some such. I'd be grateful if you could copy the reference across to this paragraph. Schwede66 18:33, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
